Amanitas Muscaria
    #11492521 - 11/20/09 02:41 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Can't find any black paper. Used notebook paper. The cap appeared to leak moisture and displaced the blue ink. If anything the spores are white. Hard to get a discernable print.
They resemble the Amanitas on shroomery without a single major discrepancy.

Extremely sticky stalk and the gills left gooey/powdery stuff on my hands a little after handling.

Amy time you're trying to identify Amanitas you need to be sure to look at the base of the stem. I can't see the stem bases in any of those photos.

While they look like they very probably are A. muscaria, we can't be certain without seeing those stem bases. Be sure to dig up the entire base, some Amanita species have bases that go down into the soil several inches like a taproot.

Happy mushrooming!

Even though those photos are out of focus (nice focus on your shoes in that last one), I think I see enough to confirm the ID.

What you're looking for is multiple rings of tissue at the top of the volva. Your last photo seems to show that, although not as clearly as one might prefer.

As far a preparation (I assume for eating), there are more references on the Internets than you can shake a stick at that'll tell you how to do that.

The only advice I'll add is to eat only a very small amount the first time. Most people find it pretty unpleasant, and a small dose will help you decide that without getting so sick you feel you might need to go to the emergency room. This Amanita plus its close relatives are the most common reason somebody calls the Poison Center in Colorado for possible mushroom poisoning. So take it easy the first time, and if you decide you like it you'll still have plenty so you can try it again with more later. Good luck either way.

Happy mushrooming!
