Hmmmm Cuba
    #1145911 - 12/16/02 11:59 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

In November 2002, for the 11th time, the UN had a vote to demand an end to the US embargo on Cuba.
173 countries voted for the resolution
3 voted against (US, Israel, Marshall Islands)
4 abstentions (Nicaragua, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia, and Malawi)
So if we are in defiance of multiple UN resolutions, does Cuba now have the right to unilaterally attack the United States to defend its economic interests?

No, nobody listens to the U.N.

BTW, we don't stop anyone else from buying from Cuba, just Americans.

The embargo on Cuban goods should be lifted, and trade with China should be restricted more.

Even if they had the right, Castro's smart enough to realize he wouldn't have a chance in hell of winning.

I don't think the embargo means the U.S. will punish Cuba for selling to Americans. It means the U.S. will punish Americans for buying from Cuba.

The U.N. has zero authority concerning American laws that apply to American citizens, and business that conduct business in America.

Sounds right Hitler... I remember Jessie Ventura in Cuba not too long ao at a US/Cuba trade convention...

The US is selling Millions of dollars worth of stuff to Cuba already... Their could be more but if the world really wants to help them out then maybe they should start trades with them too...

I could be wrong, but I think prety much every other country in the world buys from Cuba.

Sure, if America lifted the embargo I'm sure it would be good for their economy, but I don't think it would be any kind of economic revolution for Cuba.

Cuba used to be prosperous before the Soviet Union collapsed.

I've read that the US imposes some sanctions on other countries who do business with Cuba, but I can't find anything about what those sanctions are.

In reply to:

I believe you'll find that Cuba wasn't prosperous before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The USSR pumped shitloads of subsidies Cubas way.

i've heard alot people want to drop the embargo.
but the u.s. is so afraid of fucking change....it's kind of disappointing. it's like they push these matters aside until they are forgotten. those people party good too. you could hear and see their parties and music from what must have been 5-15 miles away.

***does Cuba now have the right to unilaterally attack the United States to defend its economic interests? ****

everyone has this right, however they wouldn't make it to the coast of Cuba.

I think the embargo should be lifted because the foreign economic policy of the United States is hypocritical. We do business with China and other rouge nations but refuse to deal with a third world lower class communist dictator that can't even hold on to his own people, let alone attack us.

My point was that we seem to be the only country that throws themselves around using the rules of the UN while simultaneously breaking them. Cubans are a lot better off than you would think, I definitly wouldnt consider it third world. COrruption there is almost non-existent, a stark contrast to the rest of Latin-America. I do think they would benefit greatly from economic interaction with the US, because we are just so close. Tourism alone could bring them to new heights.

US Policy is dictated by special interest lobby. A very strong lobby makes sure that the embargo stays. It is only hypocritical if you view the government of the USA as a tool for every citizen on every decision. It is a tool for this group of citizens on this decision, a tool for that group of citizens on that decision, and so on and so on. The US government is a government of the people and for the people. Citizens direct every decision that is made by our government.

When you look at it like a single mind making decisions, it will ofcourse appear hypocritical. If you look at it like it is, it is not hypocritical.

Do you know anyone with family still in CUBA? All countries are corrupt. Cuba is no acception. Living in Cuba YOU HAVE TO HAVE FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES, if you don't you have ZERO OPPORTUNITY.

The EMBARGO is designed to punish the corrupt leaders of cuba. The revolutionaries who BETRAYED the people they claimed to be helping. All dictatorships operate the same way. No matter what the sales pitch is.

This is a POLITICAL embargo. So it's effectiveness is irrelavent. Those that are politically motivated against Castro, those that had money before he took the country, now live in the USA. They are the reason behind the embargo continuing to this day. They are exercising their constituional rights, and legally influencing their government to act in their interest.

To those that immigrated to America from Cuba, FREEDOM has meaning. They understand it, they know how to use it. To them it isn't a farce, or illusion. They fled tyrrany to obtain it, and they are making the best of it. Alot of Americans could learn a Valuble lesson from the CUBAN AMERICANS. The VALUE of FREEDOM, and the COSTS associated with obtaining and maintaining it.

Has the US given Cuba terms upon which the embargo would be lifted?

As soon as Castro turns Cuba over to the US, the embargo will end.

I think it will require the people of cuba to make the move for freedom when he dies. They will ofcourse need help in doing so. Hopefully we will have a president in power willing to MAKE THE HARD DECISIONS when the opportunity arrises, again!!!!
