How do I mechanically separate copper pennies from zinc pennies?
    #11487780 - 11/19/09 08:31 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Well, I've tried a few things but with no real success. Any ideas as to how I could separate the copper pennies from zinc pennies?

I like zinc pennies because they are theoretically a good source of zinc for chemistry, and I like copper pennies since they are worth almost 2 cents (1.9 last time I checked...)

I thought density was an option, but the difference for the mass of a penny seems to be insignificant for anything I can rig up.

Thanks in advance!

Hmm.. I think you can separate them just by the date.  They started adding zinc at a certain time and they're all made with it.

Oh.. well I was hoping to do something like.. thousands.. that'd take much to long!

How could I make a better one of these little devices?

This looks easy, and seems like it could separate a few thousand in a short time period if it were made better...

according to what the other guy just posted they only contain 5% zinc and i imagine that would be really hard to get out so what would be the point or how would you go about getting the zinc?

No.. he is wrong.

Its almost pure zinc in a copper coating.
Not brass.. :P

Like I said, zinc pennies are worth less, and copper pennies are like.. 1.9 to 2 cents a piece in value.

after a little reading i guess brass is zinc, its just mixed with copper to form some kind of alloy

1982-2009 Cent (97.5% zinc)

1909-1982 Cent (95% copper)

http://www.coinflation.com/

Notice there is a huge difference...

Brass is an alloy of zinc and copper.. but that is different then 98% zinc.. vs 98% brass.

there is an acid that will separate the zink from the copper, but i think that will have the opposite effect you are after as it only leaves the copper behind.

I still want the pennies to be pennies. I just want to get the copper pennies since they are worth more money.

What a moronic way to attempt to make money.

As each penny already has a face value of 1 cent, you'd need to sort 20,000 pennies and sell them for scrap to earn 100 dollars.

If you sort 1 per second, it would take 5.7 hours of non-stop sorting. Good luck with the 1 per second thing.

By the time you figure in the time and costs spent acquiring, transporting, sorting, transporting again and actually finding a place that doesn't realize it's illegal to melt US coins.... it should occur to even the numbest among us that there would be little to no profit.

Not to mention the fines should you get caught.

Quote:

The US Mint, which is a part of the US Department of the Treasury, in anticipation of the business of melting down US pennies and US nickels for profit, implemented new regulations on December 14, 2006 which criminalize the melting of pennies and nickels and place limits on export of the coins. Violators can be punished with a fine of up to $10,000 USD and/or imprisoned for a maximum of five years.

Even if you don't melt them yourself, only an idiot scrap metal dealer might attempt to do so.

Here's a thought...... get a fucking job.

yeah, cuz copper scrappers are the most honest of people.  that is why they knowingly scrap millions of dollars of obviously stolen property every year.  basically, their only concern is whether or not u have "a copper" or "b copper", the only difference being one has solder on it.

As thieves (and their accomplices/supporters) are idiots, my point stands. As do the other points made.

How about you just weigh them?  Different metals have different specific weights.

Zinc ones should be lighter than copper ones (i imagine).

Failing that, get an education, then get a job.

I figure with inflation, the copper pennies will be worth more then 2.02 cents.

there is actually a good deal of instability in the copper market from miners frequently going on strike.  i've seen it go from 1.50/lb to 3.00.
