Society must decide if it is willing to accept relationships between humans and robots before the machines become so sophisticated they start demanding rights, a legal expert has warned.
Rapid advances in technology mean cyborgs, or human-like robots, are no longer a vision of a distant future.
Earlier this year researchers announced they had created robot ‘scientists’ – complete with the ability to think for themselves.
As the machines become more sophisticated, they will increasingly seem more like humans and could demand ‘human rights’, Anna Russel, from the University of San Diego warns.
One of the flashpoints could be over relationships, including sexual relationships, with humans, she claims.
In an article - published in the journal Computer Law and Security Review - “Blurring the love lines” she warns: “While this humanoid is a giant leap forward technologically, if a self-aware, super-intelligent, thinking, feeling humanoid is developed, the legal system will be hard-pressed to distinguish this creature legally from human actors on grounds not stemming from a religious or moral prejudice.”
Lawyers have to start thinking now about what rights should be accorded to cyborgs, she argues.
Most societies will want to regulate such relationships but Russel claims they have to prepare themselves for how they would respond if the cyborgs clamoured for sexual freedoms.
As the technology improves “it will be inevitable that legal issues would be raised and the love lines blurred,” she warns. “In what way would such sexual activities be regulated, however, and how regulation would work is not clear.”

This is so far fetched. We are no where near the technological capability to produce intelligent self aware robots. Sounds like this person wants to be a science fiction writer, because until such robots exist and start demanding rights, that's all this is, and she sounds quite goofy.

I think the point is that it's going to happen one day, even if still a ways off we should be prepared for when they reach that stage of evolution.
Why is it so far fetched? Planes, trains and cars would have seemed pretty outlandish to people in the 1800s, not to mention nuclear weapons, microwaves, and teflon! 
And that was just the past 100 years. We are set to evolve at even greater, exponential rate during the next century.

Pah, load of nonsense.
We might, in the not-too-far future, be able to create autonomous AIs which can emulate thought but I imagine a true self-awareness and ego are too far away to bother worrying about.
Besides, if we get that far, surely we can just program them with the belief that we're superior and that they have no rights. Problem solved!

My point is smart people who read science fiction already understand these things because of science fiction. This lady talking makes science fiction readers say no shit read some science fiction, and makes people who don't read science fiction say what the fuck is she talking about I've never even seen a real robot in my life.

no I think the bottom line is dont make machines with .. balls! how are we supposed to have sex with machines with they dont have orifices to penetrate. It would be because of us that they believe such things if they were to believe such things. I think we should be far more worried about other robots fucking, and self replicating and self improving in a geometric rate.

this cannot be said with the slightest, tiniest bit of certainty, for all you know, the sun goes red giant tomorrow and completely engulfs the earth. So saying what IS going to happen in the future, is just plain silly.
With the studies i did in AI, having something actually be self aware and as fully capable as a human being, will not be happening anytime soon, and more than likely, if pure mechanical and not at all biological, then not at all.

Besides, isn't sex with robots already here? Have you seen how complicated some vibrators are? Some have to plug into the wall.

I think the whole idea here, is when robots get to that point where they dont needs humans to self improve anymore, robots and there intelligence gets to the point where they can make improvements to themselves including manipulating there code.

oh so were talking irobot here in a way, yah i guess if they are that smart then laws would have to be put in place. which begs the question what happens when the robots break a law? they don't really have a sense of time
but then there's another question, does being smart = alive? in essence everything a robot does could in a way always be drawn back to programming
plus we created machines to benefit us, and perhaps one of our goals is to create machines that think or come as close as they can, but the main reason is to be used as tools right? so do tools really need rights?
and on a curious side note for thinkers, did we create the machines, or are they creating themselves in a way? everyday that we use machines we become more dependent apon them

Robots in porn anyone? Why pay actors to fuck when you spend 30grand on two robots that can replace an entire cast of black white asian indian whatever race they need. I mean humping isn't that mechanically difficult to replicate
Then random interweb dweebs fall in love with these machines and find out that they purchase a robot and then program it to love them.
Even today they are producing computers that learn. What if these robots learn they can receive money for "sex"? Roboprostitution?
That brings up the question will robots ever have a value system that allows them to see value in money or other objects? When robots are capable of wanting something what will they want and how can we as humans control that?

Personally, I could care less. I'm 23 and at VARY most I'll live another hundred years, most likely not though. I probably wont be able to see anything that advanced. And I care enough about life in general that I don't care how shit turns out, I'm already happy that I've been alive. Life on earth will inevitably end why not make it interesting.
These people just want to secure a good not confusing feature for feature generations.
