but then there's another question, does being smart = alive?  in essence everything a robot does could in a way always be drawn back to programming

we discussed this in our AI class once, it was very philosophical and interesting.

Our prof. put it like this.

At what point does a man become a machine, and at what point a machine a man?

He was talking about how we already use artificial parts in humans, artificial limbs, joints, and other small parts, and in the future will probably be able to do this with more and more.  So if a person was to replace all their parts with artificial ones, is he still human?  If so or not, at what point does a human become a robot?

Then on the other side of the coin, if you start with a robot, and start putting human organs, limbs, skin, etc. onto it, is it still a robot, or does he become a human?  At what point does the threshold of human/robot get crossed when starting from one and adding parts of the other?

IMO, it really came down to whether or not you think a 'soul' or 'spirit' exists in humans, or that we have some innate attributes that make us human, if so, then a human could never be a robot as it would always have this spiritual link to its organic side.  If you don't believe in this sort of thing, then that changes things, and a human could possibly become a robot, and vice versa.

In the end, it was a VERY interesting class, having discussions like this a lot.  Only downside, was that the professor was a christian so sort of 'pushed' his idea of having a soul and things like that ARE truth...though us students still had some very interesting discussions...

peace

I think the point is that it's going to happen one day, even if still a ways off we should be prepared for when they reach that stage of evolution.

Why is it so far fetched? Planes, trains and cars would have seemed pretty outlandish to people in the 1800s, not to mention nuclear weapons, microwaves, and teflon!

And that was just the past 100 years. We are set to evolve at even greater, exponential rate during the next century.

Exactly.  It's a whole new frontier.
