Number of chromosomes for Peyote and Trichocereus spp. ?

I was interested in figuring out the number of chromosomes for both Peyote and Trichocereus pachanoi/peruvianus. I couldn't find any information about it except for mention of some random Trichocereus cacti in a patent which mentioned how the cacti listed were polyploidy and ranged in chromosome count, but nothing definitive.

You looking to hybridize? Or just curious? How polyploid are they? Hexaploid?

Ah I was reading it wrong, Trichocereus spachianus is tetraploid.
Anyway, I'm curious as to the potential for inducing ploidy increase via Colchicine in pachanoi/peruvianus or peyote and grafting on to a fast growing succulent.
I'm having trouble finding out the definite number of chromosomes for either however. It would seem plausible that the Trichocereus spp. would be tetraploid but no information on peyote.
This topic (Colchicine) has been brought up before on this forum and is tossed around periodically on various others. Nothing definite ever comes from these discussions however (as I'm confident the procedure has a high failure rate along with being dangerous), but I wish to investigate further.

Please do, and share your results.
I have heard the chemicals for producing polys can be quite dangerous indeed.
Also when you say a faster growing succulent, you do of course mean another cactaceae right?
Failure is almost imminent if you try grafting to a non-cacti succulent.

Colchicine is used as a medicine for a couple of indications but its therapeutic index is quite low. Colchicine poisoning is nasty, there is no antidote, the survival rate is fairly low, and the LD50 is on the 10s of milligrams scale so it proper protective procedures must be carefully followed. Colchicine is fairly hard to get a hold of for a reason!

I feel like Tissue Culture would be your best bet for an experiment like this. Somehow soaking seeds or slathering young plants with a cream made out of this stuff seems like a bad idea in more ways than one. Tissue Culture would let you absorb a really high failure rate, while giving you absolute control over the chemicals used.

There are better alternatives than colchicine. Search the forum with "Polyploidy" as a keyword

The diploid chromosome count for cacti is 22, thats what the great majority are. Polyploid cacti (which are usually Opuntia relatives) are some multiple of 11. If for a given species you can find no reference to polyploidy assume a chromosome count of 2n = 22
As little as 0.007 grams of colchicine has killed people in the past and the stuff dances in static electricity
