I've been under a few times, and I'm always afraid of having some crazy bout of sleep paralysis during the whole operation. It's never happened though. I usually wake up deliriously demanding to know what's going on.

this was my experience as well... so weird, i wonder if that's what being dead is like.
i talked to my doc about it, and apparently (he said [paraphrased]) all sensory functions of your brain get shut down, while only vital functions are still "awake". but i mean, where's your consciousness go? you're pretty much just a breathing sack of bones. but i suppose sleep shares similar qualities.

Ive been put under about 3-5 times
Stomach surgery as a 10 year old leading to this
It was my first surgery of my life too, that gave me a strange viewpoint on phamaceuticals
Then I had my wisdom teeth out and I was put out for that one, even gave me demerol instead of valium for that one, just because im allegic to benzos, as stated in my link above.
My last ones were for open heart surgery

I had my eye operated on, cornea transplant.
first i got some happy gas, 2 needles to the eye socket, eye went mostly blank, then operation. only local anesthesia.
wasnt so bad, the needles were the worst. all i could see was the bright light, and all i could really feel was a little tugging when he sewed in the new one.
I psyched myself up and stayed calm and cooperative. all in all wasn't so bad.

Good thread.
I've had a hernia for quite sometime, but just went to the Doctor finally, today.
I've never had surgery and have always been sort-of terrified .. but it doesn't sound like much of a big deal.
I am sort of excited - but i wont get in for about a year!

I've always looked forward to surgery. Have been under general anesthetic three times and it's a doddle. I find it fascinating the way you can be shut down.
Injection. Cold feeling creeping up neck. Wake up after operation. That's it.
The only time anesthetic was weird for me was when they gave me ketamine to stop me struggling while they were trying to reset my broken leg. Wasn't expecting ego death so was a little surprised to have lost my body and be sliding around in a weird, swirly, liquid world.

Worst part is the sore throat you'll have when you wake up.
ITs from them forcing you too deepthroat a breathing tube.
Hopefully you wont have to go through that

For future reference, if you tell them you are scared, you'll get Valium or similar for the night before.

The not-eating is the worst part of it all, IMO.

when I got surgery on my thumb my doctor wouldn't give me shit. Even after only gave me 10 hydocodones. guess I got a conservative doctor.
