Tree Climbing?

Has anyone here ever "climbed" trees? I mean that in the rope-way or whatever you call it.
It actually looks pretty awesome, I was thinking about it, and I think I'd really like it, I mean, I like climbing trees, but I can never climb the big ones because there's usually like 20-30 feet with no branches on the bottom, but with this way, it looks like it'd make it very possible to get up in those huge trees.
I think if I did actually end up buying any equipment, I'd just want a rope and I'd tie myself a Swiss seat instead of buying a saddle and whatnot.
Anyone seen this or interested in it?

Ya, it's actually going to be a part of my job when I'm done with school!
I love climbing with a rope. Once you're able to trust in a rope you find out so many amazing things you can do!
Biggest tree I've climbed so far was like a 90ft Pinus strobus down by the local river. The wind was blowing the top of the tree around in like a 30 ft ellipse. It was wild.

That does sound pretty fun
Any suggestions for starting off? I thought to just get 1 climbing rope, maybe like 120 feet and then some carabiners and one other rope to make a swiss seat out of. But I think I;m ahead of myself...

You'll definitely need a throw line and a solid rope.
Make sure you care for your ropes properly -- that's your lifeline. If you're gonna put your life in the hands of a rope you need to keep it in tip top shape.
I would probably get a pre-made saddle...you want stitching you can trust.
I dunno, if I'm gonna have climbing gear I think it's worth it to drop cash on it to have that peace of mind. If I'm not free-climbing then I'm probably going to put my life on my gear, and I don't like cutting corners.
Don't use spurs. You really damage trees and can open them up to infection.

Circular, what classes are you taking for said job? I'm going through my potential options in school, and arborist/botanist is high up on that list.
I recommend reading a book called The Wild Trees by Richard Preston about some of the first Redwood climbers and inventors of alot of rope tree climbing technology and techniques on their search for the worlds largest trees, really an inspirational and well written book.

Yeah, I was thinking just a 1/2" 16 strand arborist rope and then a short (<20ft) length of 3/4" rigging rope to use as a Swiss seat (I really don't want to buy a saddle), then some carabiners for whatnot, and a throw line, plus something dense to tie to the end of it.
And I think I need some some of rope/lanyard to attach me to the rope and tir in a Blake's hitch or whatever.

Ya, I guess if you're comfortable without a saddle go for it lol
Come to think of it you should probably get a couple throw lines. They take some practice and it would suck to get your only one stuck.

I'm glad that I spotted this thread because I've been thinking heavily of tree climbing lately. I miss doing it as a child, but I fear that I'm too heavy now (175) for most tree limbs around my area.

No way man, I'm 210 and freakishly tall and I just climbed a badass tree and bent it back and forth about 20ft. Climbing trees is sooooo fun!

A good general rule of thumb is that if a tree branch is about as thick as your arm, it'll probably be able to support your weight. Also, keep in mind the further you work out along a branch away from the bole, the more pressure you're putting on the joint and the more likely it is to break.

i really recommend a sadle. tree climbing saddles are different than any other saddle they are supposed to be more comfortable as you WILL be sitting in it for long periods. it's not for fall arrest, it's actually your seat. a swiss seat will give you maybe 10 minutes before you start getting numb legs and ass. i do some tree work and am still learning more about climbing but have invested in a nice saddle, the biggest purchase. also have more than 1 throw bag (weight) because you can get it stuck. one of the hardest parts of climbing for me at least, is getting the line in the crotch. good luck and be safe

damn. 180' line ascent in spooner took me 20 min or more.
that's a gnarly freeclimb in big trees.
a rock harness is a pain for tree climbing, but standing into a foor prussic with part of your weight helps immensely.
i finally bought a new harness, and i'm phyched to get a nice rope and some new gear.

I need to borrow my neighbor's gear so I can climb up and clone this F officinalis. He's a logger with all the stuff and offered to pick it for me, but I'd like to cut out a few plugs and leave the mushroom in place. RR

Sorry didn't see this post till now.
I've taken a wide variety of classes...lots of general natural resource management stuff, botany classes, specific tree care classes, LOTS of tree ID stuff....
Arborism is a pretty good field to get into. Even with the economy the way it is there's lots of job opportunities.

I can climb up branches that are slightly thicker than my finger I shit you not.

Try climbing a tree on a low dose of acid and you will see what I mean.
