Flowhood Build With Stonesun (Pictorial) 11

So I'm pretty sure you guys are completely fucking bored to see flowhood building teks in the cult forum. , but there was a couple of inquires lately on how to build one, so I'll be brave enough and post mine here. If you have any questions along the lines don't hesitate to PM me for details. It's been copied form my Journal, and it is a long post... Credit goes to all of you (especially: Boris, misted, Damion, etc.) of course!
I have built this relatively cheap flowhood a few days ago, and wanted to share with the community, hope to encourage some of you out there. It is a small 12"x24" hood with a 99.99% HEPA filter. It is perfect for the home mycologist, and you can build it yourself for about half of the price as it costs online. I can not believe how cool it is to freely open a grain jar in the flow and do some G2G transfer. Or do some agar work. And you are not limited in your glovebox!
Well, here's the price breakdown:
- 12"x24" HEPA Filter (delivered) $150
- 463 cfm Dayton Blower (delivered) $95
- Birch 3/4" 8'x4' Plywood $25
- Screws, Handles, Pre-Filter, etc. $20
As you can see, the total was $300 for this project. Actually it was a little less, because I've had some screws and filter material at home.
I could have went with some cheap plywood, but rather chose the 3/4" birchwood, because it was on sale @ the local HD. I've done all the calculation ahead, and the guys were more than happy to cut it up for me for free. I needed:- 2ea. 24"x16" (top and bottom panel)
- 2ea. 13 1/2"x16" (side panels)
- 1ea. 12"x24" (back panel)
- 4ea. 10"x12" (blower cage covers)
- 1ea. 12"x13 1/2" (top of blower cage)
Besides the panels I've bought:
I've also got some 3/4" & 1 1/4" Wood Screws and some brass handles and "L"'s for holding the blower cage to the bottom box.
Here are all the tools required to assembly the flowhood.
I've got all the panels sanded down and ready for some action.
Started with the side panels. Pre-drilled all the pilot holes needed on each of them.
Then I went with the bottom panel, and measured 6" back from the front side, and attached the 1"x1" strip with silicone and screws.
Did the same thing with the side panels.
Here you can see everything pre-drilled, all 1"x1"'s attached, ready to assembly.
Time for the screwing!!!
On the top panel I cut the opening for the blower, mine has 8"x4". Then comes the silicone, and secure the bad boy!
After this I put a good amount of silicone on the inner edges on the BACK of the box.
Attached the brass handles.
Time to build the top box, which is actually the cover for the squirrel cage blower. All holes are drilled, and at the intake side of the blower a hole has been cut to host the pre-filter.
Then I attached the whole top to the bottom box with the brass "L" brackets. I went with these, because I wanted to have easy access to the blower, if something happens to it.
Cut out the filter and secured it to the wood. I have found this white piece of something in my garage, and screwed it on to the side.
Let the trimming begin!!!
Now it's time to get that HEPA filter out. Be very careful with it, and install it. Push it back against the 1"x1", and secure it with the trimming. Ahh, I almost forgot. Before you put the filter in, go ahead, and vacuum all the crap out of the box. I even wiped it out with alcohol.
Filter in place, started to trim in.
A little finishing touch.
And the finished project!!!
Thank you for your patience!

Actually while I was finishing up, I've heard some intense splashing from the backyard on the bay and this is what it was.
They went crazy!!! This one picture is right off my seawall.
