name this book
    #1146755 - 12/16/02 07:50 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

i was wondering if someone might have read this book and perhaps know the name of it. i read this book in high school but i can't remember the name of it. it was sort of like 1984. it was about this guy living in a world where everyone was the same. they wore the same kind of clothes, had the same routine, and basically had the same thoughts. all forms of individuality were taken away. somehow the guy escapes into the forest and comes across this house that was built i think in the past. in the house he finds evidence of a different culture. i also seem to remember that there was a girl with him. also, throughout the story, they keep mentioning something about an unmentionable word. noone was allowed to say it. in the end it turns out the word was EGO. i'm not even positive that it was a book. it could have been a short story. any help in this matter would be appreciated. i've been trying to remember the name of it and it is driving me crazy. thanks!

Brave New World - Aldous Huxley?

Ursula K Le Guin has a book where some guy is running away from a society and he finds all these other people. I can't remember which one it is as i've read so much of her work. You should try reading all her stuff anyway as she's one of the greatest Sci-Fi writers of all time.

that book was "Anthem" by Ayn Rand.

the unspoken words were those related to self like "I" and "mine".

p.s. here is a good overview of the story:

I think The Giver was like that lottery story where one person gets stoned to death
