Well sure he could use it in a fraudulent manner, but if he's a Shroomery vendor it's highly unlikely. Even if he does, you have protection through your bank. Personally I would simply hold onto the email correspondence so if something does go wrong you'll have documentation. Also, request a receipt after the purchase is made.

Any vendor can use your credit card number for evil, no matter how you give it to them.
If you trust him, its ok to send your card number in email. Its possible it could be sniffed that way, but very unlikely.
If you don't trust him you sholdn't send him your number in email or via web shopping cart or card swiper or any other way.
Since you have no control over the data once you give it to someone, always assume your card is compromised and watch your statements so you can get all the extra fraudulent charges taken off.

I can attest to this.
I run a e-commerce site for the sporting goods company I work at, and all credit card numbers pass through me. I run all the cards manually (not at checkout) so I can notify the customer of a backorder, etc. before I've charged the card.
I have no intention of using anyone else's card, but it would be so easy.
The only trick is that the billing address is used to confirm that you are you, say if you are buying something online.
When I process a card, I'm given a code that says whether you gave me the correct billing address. If you did, and you want it shipped to a different state, I'll think twice about it. The only recourse a merchant has to credit card fraud is proving that the billing address matched, and the merchandise was shipped to that address (with a tracking number!)
Also, all you have to do if you notice charges on your bill that you didn't make is go to the credit card company and request a chargeback to the vendor. You just have to sign saying you were in possession of the card at the time of the sale, and that you didn't make the purchase.
Really, the only loser usually is the merchant.

^ Good Advice.
Quite a few credit card companies offer some sort of virtual credit number generation service which will generate a credit number with a dollar amount and a time limit for online transactions.
These are really quite handy when one is worried about a shady Internet transaction or sending CC details through e-mail. Of course, if the merchant just rips you off you will have to contest the charge. However if a 3rd party who intercepted your details tries to use the card after you have received your merchandise, the virtual card is already deactivated or the limit has already been reached.

Virtual cards are awesome! I use paypal. It's great for those "bill me later" or reoccurring charges scams. I get the free sample for the cost of shipping or whatever and when they go to charge the $59.99 a month plan that came with it the card is already dead!
