gypsum
    #1144537 - 12/16/02 03:52 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I live in UK and can't seem to find gypsum anywhere.

Anyone know where i can get it or what i can use instead of it?

It seems that most of these various substrate casing things suggest gypsum. What's it for? How important is it?

My first attempt at casing (Organic peat and bark compost with verm) is flushing amazingly well at the moment. So what differences would i notice if i had added gypsum?

Thanks for any help.

Plaster of Paris. I got a big tub of it at Michael's (craft store) for 3 dollars. You can also check pretty much any hardware store. Ask for plaster of paris, any questions get asked and it is for your kid/cousin/whatever to make paintable molds for refrigerator magnets or something (that's what I did with the stuph when I was a kid)

it's put in grain jars to make sure they don't stick together and colonize a lil better and easier to shake.

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

I read recently on the boards here that plaster of paris is carcinogenic, and sould be avoided at all costs. Don't know if its fact or not, just raising awarness.

Gypsum is never used in casing layers, and it's not necessary in substrates either as long as you shake right after PC'ing.

Thanks to you all.  I don't think i'll bother then as my wheat grains seem to be ok without it.

Plaster of paris sounds rather dodgy to me as well.
