i have tried but the oven dries the substrate too much. perhaps bake dry grains then add sterile water after might improve success.

When fucking w/ birdseed, you must have a pressure cooker because the endospores need to be broken down in the kernel, this is only accomplished by autoclaving..GoodLuck!

I bake my rice flour and verm seperately before I mix my substrate. This does not replace sterilization after mixing and putting in jars, but it does get rid of all the contaminants present in the rice flour and verm beforehand.

I still have to recommend the pressure cooker. You have the power of science working for you. And what you can do with a pressure cooker is for those ultra tough little heat resistant contaminants you can just pull the stopcock or weight and go for a MASSIVE DECOMPRESSION (strong jars only); just like having your ass caught out in space; and revel in knowing all those little germs are really getting their cells destroyed in a most horrific fashion.

Very poetic Learner. I can visualize that...

Ya, I just forked out $50 for a large pressure cooker, and the best thing about it is: you KNOW the high-temp-pressure has done it's job. The hard part now is creating a good sterile inoculation environment.

Take it easy...
