Email claiming to be from USPS saying package was seized...fake?

I opened up my spam folder and there was an email claiming to be the United States Postal Inspection Service. postalinspect@noreply.com .
The email tells me to download a file that is attached, but I think it might be a virus or something.

Did you order anything that could possibly have been seized? Salvia maybe? It's illegal in the states now. Maybe a 'legal' RC?

The thing is Im not expecting anything. I do remember ordering an RC about a year ago that never came, but I thought I just got scammed. Id assume if it was a legit email it would come from a .gov address and not "noreply.com"

I don't know, if it's been a year, I wouldn't open it. @noreply could be from anywhere. It could easily be from USPS. I believe they do use an @noreply address, but so do basically all companies/newsletters. My college sends through @noreply too. Could be anything. Do you have good virus software?

Actually, I believe the USPS would send you a letter (via snailmail) telling you your package was seized, AFAIK. Delete the email - it probably has something you don't want.

Its a virus for sure. They always have something like invoice.zip which has a little .exe for you to run.

Nothing of an official nature like that is ever sent by email. It always comes as snailmail. Another popular malicious spam comes in the guise of an email by Western Union, saying that the wired money is waiting for you and to get the Money Transfer Security Number (MTSN) from the attached document, which is - again - a virus in a zip archive. If your local virus scanner doesn't find anything, you can still test it. Unpack the file, but don't run the exe. Upload it to http://www.virustotal.com. They will check it against dozens of antivirus programs. Also, learn to read email headers. Check IPs.

One of the oldest tricks in the book. No legit agency is going to ask you to open a file. They will promise you anything. I get spam all the time that promises me a $1000 kmart gift card, or sears, wallmart... etc. A glance through my spam folder has dozens of subjects saying i've won this and that.
A variation is an email from a girl pretending she wants to meet you and let you do what you want. There is usually a pic attached. One little catch, you have to "register" with some dating site to make sure you are ok. The site wants all your personal info. I went to one of those sites and the application for the free membership was 2 pages. On the first page it wanted ss number, credit card number and exp date and a bunch of other stuff. So it's either malware or id theft or some swindle.

Just today i got an email supposedly from the irs. The return addy was service@irs.gov and looking at the headers i could not see where it really came from. One of the tips it was fake was that it did not have a "to" address anywhere in the headers. It also did not address me by name. It just said i had a refund of 600 some odd dollars coming and to download an attachment and fill it out. Naturally i didn't download or fill it out. I replied to the email and asked if it was a scam. It almost certainly did not come from the addy given. Maybe they can track it down?

Oh, I guess it's not illegal in all the states. It's definitely illegal in Florida and several other states. Florida sucks...
