Basically look at my tae kwon do training as counter-effective, I basically had to unlearn everything they taught me Now I'm a lazy ass and haven't practiced or studied anything in about 2 years

Dabbled in Dim Mak.. I didn't learn too much besides a few vital points. I had to study acupressure/massage and how to FIX shit before they taught you how to break it. I never got too deep into it.
Acting hard is the classic sign of a douchebag. Anyone who is a master of any martial art doesn't just go around picking fights with people. The first thing I learned in martial arts is that you only fight if you absolutely have to, otherwise.. run away or avoid it completely. I haven't been in a real fight in over 12 years. But I'm confident that I can defend myself if I had to. But I would most likely avoid it. I'm out like slippery trout

Shroomism said: Not saying all belt system martial arts are flawed, just that they tend to focus more on the belts than the actual skills and that can attract the "power hungry" element. Like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it's on a belt system.. but definitely not a joke. I'm sure Kenpo is the same way. And Aikido.. I never studied it but I knew a dude who was very advanced in it.. I once saw a huge guy attack him and he flipped him and launched him about 30 feet into a wall.
well, there are some McDojo's, and places that just want to take your money, then there are good places.
If you are in a place where everyone around you is respectful, and you are a lower rank and the higher ranks realize they have been there too, and they arent just handing out black belts, it doesnt much matter.
properly used, the belt system doesnt advance you just knowing the material, and has a good handle on things, otherwise it would be hard to take them seriously, i personally see that the higher ranks are indeed more skilled where i am at, of course some people will always detract from any place, but everyones a critic.
also i think the 90% for BJJ is a crock, and BJJ really is a complimentary art,
you should never WANT to fight on the ground, its a terrible idea to intentionally go there, but its good when you are actually there, just dont expect it to work without some other skills.

I think learning how to avoid violence is the ultimate martial art. When i changed my mentality from being able to defeat attackers to being able to simply avoid the confrontation i realized how much more effective this is.

I train MMA, but do not fight, probably have no intention to in the future.
I come from a Muay Thai background, did that for ~4 years through highschool, 6-0 in amateur lightweight (semi-contact).
I took a break for a few years (drugs ).
Now I'm back, I obtained my blue belt in BJJ recently, doing some amateur wrestling and working my way back into full fight conditioning for Muay Thai, it's a bit tricky now that I'm primarily a raw foodist... can't rely on pasta

Depends on the situation.
If it was 1 vs 1 and there was no chance of another opponent entering the fight, you could always just pull guard then move into a choke or bar from there.
I'm still very wary of trying to shoot larger opponents, I'm very comfortable in a clinch so I would rather just pull guard and work something out from there... I'm a very chill guy though so I would never get into a street fight in my life.
Also once it's out of ring/arena, groin strikes, eye gouging, small joint manipulation... fights are going to be INCREDIBLY damaging very quickly and the need for a proper submission or knockout aren't really needed.

Grappling is definitely effective. In fact i would fear fighting a grappler. But i think people have to much faith in it because of UFC. Once you have been hit by someone who really knows how to punch you realize how hard it is to close in on a good striker and that your normal person just can't take punishment like UFC guys do.
Grappling is still awesome though and much faster to learn than striking.

Which is why you train to take a punch
It is indeed very hard to close in a good striker, but once that person is on the ground and they have no skillbase, it's OVER. You have to be able to recognize what the grappler is trying to do otherwise you will slip into a choke or a bar within seconds.
There's a difference between someone that's not soo good on the ground and someone that knows NOTHING. Even if it's only a single day with a BJJ instructor learning to avoid the very elementary techniques... but if you got ZERO experience, you're not going to have a single clue what the guy on his back is setting up as he starts moving around. Next thing you know, the striker is going for a ground punch and by releasing "x" limb he's opened himself up to an extremely easy submit.

Yeah that's true, that's why its so important to learn. But in my opinion there is nothing like a good striker. My friend is pretty high level in wing chun and if he hits you, you will be concussed or unconscious and he's lightening quick so it won't be just one punch. Its really unbelievable how powerful these guys can get, they seriously remind me of jedi's. But it takes ages to get that good, where as you can learn to choke someone out in half an hour.

If there is anything UFC has taught us.. it's that to be well rounded is the best method. This was also Bruce Lee's philosophy, to excel in everything and nothing. Use the most efficient movements possible without confining yourself to a particular 'style'. MMA probably wouldn't exist the way it does today if it weren't for him. I agree that striking is the quickest and most effective way to take someone out. You don't WANT a fight to end up on the ground. Ideally you want the fight over in the first 3 seconds. But if it does end up on the ground, which many street fights do.. the person with submission grappling experience is going to dominate the person with none every time, I don't care how big he is.
