Spawn/Sub ratio
    #11448971 - 11/13/09 06:29 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

ok i have searched and can't find an answer just questions...

I am starting a new grow 2moro with 12 quarts of wbs. The strain is PE and and I have 2 90 qt tubs.

So I am going to do 6 qts of spawn per tub. I will be using coir/verm as a substrate. My question is for 12 quarts of spawn how much sub should I be using?

well.. depends.. are you confident about contams not being an issue?

If so, go 4:1 ... would be 48qts of sub

if you feel it may be an issue.. go 3:1, 2:1, 1:1

Sorry for the generic answer, but the goal is always to spread it as thin as possible.. however for guaranteed-ish success you do it at a lower ratio.

So less sub means higher yield? Why would less be better? excuse my questions but this will be my first monotubs

Less sub means less chance of contams. More sub = more yield, but a higher ratio of spawn to sub means higher chance of contams. I usually do a 4:1 or some times if I'm feeling lucky I'll do a 6:1 First few grows I did a 2:1

it will be a given yield based on the size of the sub.. no matter how you spawn it. Using more spawn, speeds the process, and allows the myc to take over faster than contams... if contams aren't an issue, then increase your sub.. more colonized sub means more fruit. So, in a way yes.. but 12 quarts of sub spawned at 1:1 and 12 quarts spawned at 4:1 will be like in yield. Of course, 12 quarts of sub<24 quarts of sub.

It will take longer to colonize, which is why he asks.  6 qts per 90 qt mono? sounds a little low for my liking. I put 6 qts in a 60ish qt mono.

If these are your first you might be better off using all 12 for one tub.

so in my case 4:1 would be the 48 qts coir/verm and then the 12 qts of spawn.

would 90 qt tubs be a little big then considering that only 30 qts will be used in each tub?

Should I make more jars?

I'm not so sure how significant the ratios are in determining fruit size.  Wouldn't a well hydrated tray of cased grains and one of 50:50 mix put out comparable yields?

The main issue here is water content, is it not? I wouldn't think nutes are playing that much of a role here. Am I missing something?

What are the dimensions of the bottom of your tub? IS it tapered at all? What depth are you going for? 4" is recommended for optimal performance.

That info would help.

Depends on the substrate and the relative nutrient value of the grain. It's nutritious stuff, skews the rest of the mix.

im confused. why would using less spawn and more coir equal more fruits? what is so special about coir and vermiculite that the more of it you use and the less rye you use: the bigger your yield?

i dont see the science behind that. as long as your substrate is the same depth/size, it doesnt matter how much parts of each (rye or coir) you use (within reason)

or maybe im just confused by what you are saying.

I never said what was in the sub makes the difference (Edit: Sub nutrients does make a difference.. I know.. wasn't my point, more colonized product = more fruit, i don't know shit about growing on coir).. I merely said more sub would. Yes.. my point was missed. Regardless of the amount of spawn you used, if it fully colonized, more sub would put out more product. There is no science for that.. just more=more

The only stipulation I tried to point out was using more sub and less spawn opens you up to possible issues.

ah sorry i did misunderstand.

yes, the more substrate you use, the more your yield will be.

more in fact, does equal more.

I should add to the OP, for a 90 qaurt tub, I use one 5lb bag of spawn.. I have yet to measure how many quarts = a lb of WBS, I just know the weight.. but I have done large tubs.. 1 5lb bag and 4" sub depth.. has had great success.

A 4lb dry bag of seed does exactly 7 qt jars, floaters removed for me.

I would say that 5lb would be approx 9 qts.
