Should I read Moby Dick?
    #11448791 - 11/13/09 03:52 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

No poll, just wondering.  I'm really getting the itch to read a good book again, but without school or a teacher to direct me, I'm completely lost.  I wanna read something with characters I'll fall in love with, and something that makes me think.  Obviously I want an enjoyable read without too much brain strain.

Some others I was considering were The Color Purple, Slaughterhouse Five, The Brothers Karamazov, Blood Meridian, The Tropic of Cancer.

Maybe I should say that, too.  I like fairly contemporary American literature, nothing terribly old or fancy, but deep, y'know?

Help.

I think Moby Dick is one of the great products of American literature and no serious student should not have read it.

In the book 'Spiritually Incorrect Enlightenment', Jed McKenna postulates that Moby Dick is about Melville's enlightenment and gives a 'key' to the book.

It's interesting if you're into that sort of thing.

I very much enjoyed Shogun.  It is not, however, great literature.  It is a great story.  They are not necessarily the same.  Sometimes they are but not often.
