Suspended driver's License

Does anyone know if there is a database for license suspension that spans multiple states? Like if SWIM has a suspended NY license, and gets pulled over in another state, can the cop check (roadside or otherwise) if the license is suspended without calling the NY DMV?

I lost my license once for 5 years. My license was suspened but I was still able to drive in any state but West Virginia. Eventually when it expired I tried to get a Maryland license but they wouldn't give me one because I was suspended in WV. Then I was just fucked. I think alot of it depends on what state it is. Some states recognize shit like that from other states, and some states don't. This is how it was 12 years ago. No idea if things have changed since then.

The states in question are NY (where the suspension is) and NV (where I want to rent and drive a car for a weekend). Generally I wouldn't chance it either.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but just wondering if anyone knew for sure. I know out of state warrants show up on the scanner, but expired insurance does not, among other things.

Almost all the states are in the driver's license compact. That means if you have a suspended license anywhere in the US you can't get a license anywhere else.
Also another state can suspend your license where ever you're at. They just pretend you had a license in that state and enter it into the computer as suspended. I'm not sure how legal that is but they did it to me.

Out of curiosity, do you know where can I get information on this? Mine isin't suspended for long, but it would be interesting to know...

Call your DMV, they can tell you what records they have on it. Usually if it's from another state they will only have that you are marked as suspended, what state it was from, and a contact number for them.

No, if her license was suspended she would not be able to drive anywhere in the US legally.
If WI was the state her license was from she'd be suspended everywhere. If her license was from another state and she got suspended in WI then it goes back to the laws in the "home state". Thus she could be suspended in WI and allowed to drive everywhere else if her home state doesn't suspend for MCs.
Any state you have a license in you can be suspended there and it applies to the whole US.
I ran into this problem before. My new state hadn't returned my old state's license as they should have so both states considered me to have a license from them. I had some fines get me suspended in my old state which then got my new state's license suspended. Of course, nobody told me anything and I didn't find out until I went to renew my license.
I was pretty pissed that my old state had suspended a license I shouldn't have even had and I ended up having to pay the fines to get another license in my new state.

I just noticed that Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennessee (dropped out in 1997), and Massachusetts are the states that don't belong to the compact.
Other states are free to suspend people for violations reported from non-member states though, so anything could happen in any state.

Thanks for doing the legwork on that one. I'm not going to drive regardless, but good to know.
