ID request (midwest)
    #11442068 - 11/12/09 04:13 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

hey guys whats up? i just got back from taking a stroll through the woods on a nice little trail i know and i stumbled across these guys.

so Habitat would be, woods growing from fallen tree, midwest

the caps are a light brown coffee stain kind of color, they are all fairly large caps 1 to 4 inches across.

white/offwhite gills.

the stems are also pretty short and stalk and like half an inch to an inch thick.

no spore print yet, but im guessing it would be a very light one.

heres the pics.

if theres anything else you might need to help me identify these mushrooms please let me know.

thanks

:peace:

You know, I think I may've seen one on my travels today, or something extremely similar. It was huge. Must've been 12 inches in diameter. It was growing out of a living tree, I thought, but maybe there was a bit of dead wood near it or something.

I'm not sure, but I can guess. The Armillarias are tree-eating fungi, so I'm guessing they're likely to be found anywhere you get a particular type of tree.

According to wiki Amanita Muscaria likes growing near pine, spruce, fir, birch, and cedar trees and in deciduous and conifer woodland. I suppose if you find a type of tree they both like then it could be an indicator. Whether the honey mushrooms grow on the trees mentioned, I'm not sure.
