Bacterial contamination is very hard to get rid of and yes it rapidlly kills the mycellium. Sometimes it's not easy to spot because some bacteria do not show any color. You notice it's presence when the substrate gets moldy and beggins to rot.

Wich stage of growth are you refering to ?
If the bacteria developed during or after pinning, the mycellium might look as if it was dying. Try to know if it smells bad, there are other colorless contaminants besides bacteria that can kill mycellium.
Have you checked the contamination faq ?

There are also several bacteria that can live on the fruit itself. You will usually end up with a nasty mucus on the caps or sunken blotches (like a soft spot on an apple) on the caps as well. I have also seen the center of the stems start to rot from the inside out... usually a nasty black ooze.
