What kind of world is this going to be? And will we want to live in it?

When I speak of "overpopulation" I do it subjectively. I know we can pack more rats into the maze. Your statement above is also subjective to your personal experience. "Going to be"?  It's already a lost cause from my experience. Things were different when I was a kid.

Pop will never reach those heaights. There will be massive catastrophes coming, such as food shortages, and what follows malnutrition(disease).

Also, major wars are always a possibility. Super powers such as the states and russia are by no means having fun with each others antics...throw china into the mix and the rest of EU and thats a massive war....over what? Not yet sure, could be resources, major shifts in economics(ie. china is thinking about converting its trading currency to euro's, devestating the North American Economy.

It really is difficult to say for certain...meh, people are not political in our society therefore talk about it, which usually leads to spreading of messages, is pointless. STill a nice excercise.

I think a fruitful discussion would be to what extent so-called "overpopulation" is actually just a matter of unequal distribution of natural resources.  The US has a low fertility rate, yet our consumption of resources is much greater than what most people on the planet consume, even in other developed countries.

It is all improper management. If we dropped all of our resources toward military world wide. Then take those resources toward green technology, space travel and agriculture. The next 50-100 years overpopulation will be synonymous with mis-management of the World. Wake up, to say that this one is not meant is saying you are not meant. Every human life is precious and necessary. A civilized world is possible. However, military (of every country) would need to be destroyed.

Ok, in an ideal civilized world. We would harmonize with nature. This means keeping a population relative to resources. We shift all of our labor to machines. Now no one works. We are free to do what we want with our time. I believe we could function as a collective of city states. Local law enforcement would be necessary. I know it's not a perfect system. But at least we wouldn't have to worry about world wars.

Precious is a subjective value judgment. I doubt evolution thinks about this.

And how do you know that in understanding basic evolution theory we do not understand what's going on. More subjective value judgments.

Humans haven't changed their basic emotional blueprint in our known history. There is no reason to believe that we will ever become non violent to some degree. It's very natural.

I suggest you grow a thick skin here. It makes things much more fun.

Is this reasonable considering human nature/history/current events as several have pointed out?

Yeah very reasonable indeed.

As long as people work there won't be an overpopulation, the problems will stem from a bad administration of rescources which practical wise is only made easier by the ever advancing technology, and progression of sceince.

The population will be able to create more and more and from an ethical point of view that's the best we can hope for (as we're all gonna die anyways).

So again subjective. Technology combined with human irrational behavior makes for a bad experience imo and the more folk doing it the worse it is.

Science today cannot explain everything. How do you fill in the gaps? If we are evolving what is the natural selector? I don't believe we are maintaining an environment we can continue to evolve in. The majority is suffering. Because of the mis-management of our leaders. Also genetically we can never be peaceful. Total extinction of man would be good also. Hopefully we can imagine something better.

This is probably the very most important issue facing us, well rather our future humans and all life that might care about its own existence.

Its crazy to think how much we have overflown in the past 2000 years. This slow slow process has been goin for so long, at what point will anyone realize life as such isnt even worth living? How could a human saturated planet be better unless peoples views were changed and we really were convinced we like this better. Much evolution in our aesthetic side of the matter will be necessary or massive terrible die offs. Or maybe people will realize how shitty things have gotten and stop fucking (hardly likely) so something interesting is brewing.

Question is, as an individual are you going to spread your genes, be responsible for persisting a race that has apparently overflown, that is one that is headed away from our prehistory at an extremely high rate of prolification? I am thinking about that, I guess surely I dont want to have more than 1 or 2 kids (even then....) but to have anymore than 2 I dunno, seems kind of short sighted at this point. Adoption is perhaps the highest ideal, but obviously none of this is binding... thus the volcano of humanity is gearin up for something.

Just what could we infer it to be, who could say....

In this 'ideal world', who are the people? Are they also 'idealised' minions of yours?

I am immediately skeptical of anyone who has this vision of a future where no one is working. Are you supposing some elite new-age intelligent robots that can maintain themselves as well as maintaining the planet for all humans? Does your idealised world require such imaginary devices?

The average person is uneducated, ignorant and compleltly oblivious(intnentionally/unintentionally) of the severity of the problems and how soons they will affect them.

They also have a blind trust in government.

IF you do a little math, you will realize that if the average individual makes up the largest percentage of the population and since population is expanding, so is the sheer numbers of average people(as per my description).

To me this is alarming and the more the not merrier, rather the other way around.

I was trying to stress the point that science doesn't have everything explained now. It is an ideal. The best way to deal with the unknown is to accept it, or whatever you do. Subjectively speaking, I believe science will know all. Given an infinite amount of resources, an infinite amount of time, with an infinite intellect, all is known.

Don't you think, by removing the military, you just leave the door open to gangs and mobs?

I don't know Zep Tepi's motivation for this. But when I, friends or authors I've read, considered this idea it seems to assume that humans are essentially good and under the right circumstances would realize they don't need weapons, violence, military, if those weapons, violence and military were removed. This might be true, or possible  but the world is as it is and people are (conditioned) as they are, and there are many malicious forces and those who would maliciously prey on good intent... and so on. You seem to know this already. I mention it to get feedback.

The problem I have with such theories is that, even if most people are good, it is clear that many people are not. We have to live with these people.

And even the good people, are limited by language, by beliefs. They will undoubtedly come up against disagreement.

But what is this idea that humans need weapons, violence, military? I don't think it has to do with need. It has to do with wants. Humans will always have wants. In fact, the more peace they have, the more explicit, ideosyncratic desires they have, because of all the time they have to spend thinking about what they want. How do you cope with everyone's wants? People cant have everything.

We have only whitnessed people being cooperative when they live in a stable environment. (edit: when I say 'people' I mean societies. Individual groups often work together the most when they are in dire times) The 'stability' of our current world is based on an economy that thrives on instability. It is in fact only stable in places that have good economic growth. or, alternatively, no civilisation (im sure various tribes live peacefully).

Although there will always be good people, people are animals and there will always be bad people because such people have survival advantages.

I get the vibe that people get depressed thinking about the corruption of man. But I think its OK when there are systems in place to moderate the ability of individuals to exert their will.

Ie. in order to provide freedom to good people, you need to take away other freedoms. Thats what we do. We have nations with laws, that describe the freedoms of people. When people show they are bad, they lose freedoms. When people contribute, they gain freedoms (money.. though i realise it is not the fairest system). Now, how do you suppose laws are maintained?
A lot of people think it is the police. But the police are more of a civil service in place to avoid having to mobilise the military. The military is there to enforce a nation's rules. If they were not enforced, then they would not be rules, they would merely be guidelines, and thus they would be broken by the bad people that necessarily exist due.

there is nothing good about absolute freedom... because it means that the brute forces of the world are free to rip you to shreds.

this doesnt mean people arent essentially 'good'. It just means that people arent perfectly good.

DOES OVERPOPULATION as it stands to you, exist as a source of a catastrophic future? Or is it a buffer than  affects the onset and severity of other problems(war, economic collapse, disease)

Ie. Do these economic problems stand on their own or are the outgrowths of overpopulation?

start long rant/-->

I have a secret brewing theory that homosapiens did not evolve in the typical manner assumed by slow steps, but rather, early humanoids bred wildly, spreading fast. Because there were no threats to them (relatively), many, many variations popped up. This is what happens when animals have it good. they breed and breed. This does not mean 'devolution' it is merely one part of evolution - the genetic variation stage.

The early humanoids were not seperate distinct species like humans and bonobos, but more like different breeds, eg. alsatians and poodles.

We humans are descendant from a particularly powerful, manipulative, intelligent humanoids with roughly the sort of body shape that we have now. However there would have been hundreds of other types of humanoids living in sparse groups all around the place.

The humanoids that we derived from were epic travellers and wanted to claim the world to themselves. The early humanoids all had bizarre emotions, that were sorta-complex mutations that arose simply because everyone could survive. Our humanoids had egotistical notions of elation that motivated them to conquer, because this provided them with self esteem, what has now developed into pride.

What is significant about this secret theory of mine is that The humans that we descended from stuck together. They recognised their own kind and felt strong emotions for eachother. They needed to identify themselves apart from all the other humanoids.

Over time they conquered women from all tribes. They spread their genes. Because they actually were superior, genetic purity became a survival advantage and thus the people who were very discriminative had high survival chance because they were more likely to breed with humans with compatible and healthy genes.

Over time they destroyed all other humanoids, as part of their natural progression. Due to the assimilations with other humanoids, we have distinct peoples. This is why we have different races.

However humans were left with a horrible stain. Once they had destroyed all the other humanoids, they were left merely with humans. But they still had the desire to conquer and prove themselves. So they began to fight eachother. They began to purify the races.

At the moment, all the races are basically the same, except for visible differences. Racism occurs when people are compelled to purify their race and rid themselves of the other breeds, because this helped previous humans become strong and plentiful. But in the end, people from all races can come together in harmony and love because essentially we are the same peoples, it is just that we have lingering instincts from the days when humans were not alone.

Just imagine two humanlike tribes coming together in an area that was controlled by some lesshumanlike tribe. the humans would just team together and win. Humans can work together at the drop of the hat, as long as they have some sort of obvious indication tha they are in the same group.

Nowadays we try in so many ways to fuel our instincts of pride and greed and the purity of our group, because it is part of who we are as human beings. And these instincts will always run in parallel to the wonderfully loving and tolerating instincts that allowed us to work together during those same rough times in the past.

NOW THE POINT IS

overpopulation at the moment... may just be a case of genetic proliferation... so many people are living today.. there are basically NO factors that systematically provide survival advantages. At the most, there are factors that make people breed more. BUT this is only a survival advantage if people are dying because it means you are filling up the stock with your own genes. If 'dumb' people are surviving, it is only a problem if they manage to kill off the 'smart' people.

But I do not think it is as simple as smart or dumb.

Smart people are people who can work things out in society and take control.

Dumb people are those who cant. It doesnt mean they have a dumb gene. It just means that any one of the processes that 'normal' humans use to communicate and make sense of the world are not quite present. These 'dumb' people may have all kinds of weird sensory traits or emotional trends that simply play no role in today's world.

But when population really starts rising.. some weird people might emerge.

Overpopulation is, I believe, the only way that a complex being like a humanoid can evolve, because the pressures of normal living are too great to let vague mutations through.

however when the animals can breed and survive easily, multiple layers of mutation can occur that are enough to provide a functional difference. These multiple layers must first make an animal less fit. It must simply survive by luck, rather than by fitness.

yes it needs more developing.

why do you think humanoids were never united?

I have heard people say that humans would unite much stronger if we discovered an alien race. I generally agree.

On the problem of overpopulation, it is a problem, but it isnt a problem. I think it is a problem because we cant kill people legally in large numbers and thus many people will end up dying anyway. But.. thats the thing in the end heaps of people die and heaps of people live, the discrete numbers dont seem that important in the long run.

I think the more immediate problems of overpopulation are that it will force civil unrest. Although I think wars are inevitable and traditionally have been the only way to really change paradigms, I generally want to avoid war for my sake, and the sake of my potential offspring.

You would need a specially designed filtered mask, ordinary masks do not offer immunity.

Could turn it into a new fashion, how cool would you look in one of these.

It would depend on precisely what the problem is, and also on how severe it is.

I'm not very sure I agree. Early humans it now seems from evidence gathered were big time wasters and polluters. They did not have however the numbers or technology to overwhelm the ability of nature to restore itself from the effects of their actions.

But in the end this is not the issue for me. I'm sure we can create a grid we can all live on so just about every usable inch has a human or a plowed field on it. There need be no more or very few wild places with other species going about the business of life as we do. We and a few chosen creatures will be safe. But it's not for me and I'm going to be very glad to be gone.

anarchy is just a diversion of the problem to something that cannot be isolated with a concept like 'government'. There is never true anarchy, humans always create laws. There is merely different extents to how they enforce the laws, how large their jurisdiction is, and how much people know about the laws and try to follow them.

in other words, anarchy is nothing.. it is merely breaking up government into little entities known as 'leaders' or 'persuasive people' who might try to enforce their opinions in any way they like

Easy-to-ready article with another perspective:

John Feffer: Overpopulation - Overhyped

"More pertinent than how we procreate is how we farm: whether we use the land for biofuels, whether we depend on industrial agriculture, whether we cut down the rainforests, whether we devote large portions of land and grain production for livestock. If we don't change the way we farm, we will still reach our approaching limits of energy, land, and carbon emissions at current or even lower population levels. Our systems of production are set up in a way to produce this crisis, regardless of whether there are 6 billion people or 3 billion people who need to eat. Of course, with fewer people, the onset of the crisis wouldn't be as rapid. But if we don't change the systems, the crisis will come nevertheless. Overpopulation, in other words, is an aggravating factor, not a driving factor."

I was sort of just speaking about American and/or the global society of human beings, but obviously, peace and anarchy would be much easier to attain/sustain within a relatively extremely small group of people. :mob:

Before there is only a "relatively extremely small group of people" left on the Earth, billions have to die, so I doubt it would happen soon after the world runs out of oil; also, you have to consider that alternative energy technology has been improving lately. :earth:

The fact that the ideal has no place in our world is inane. How could we do anything in the real world if we dont plan things in an ideal realm? Nothing would be designed if we didnt work in an ideal environment and then develop a method of making the ideal work in the real world.

Just because an idea is impossible in our world, doesn't mean it has no use.

IMO no. There is no evidence that is reasonable for the existence of a soul. The idea of soul, imo, is a direct result of death anxiety in man.

Oh i was replying to ploid. Yea i definitely want more from life. I've seen what I want in dreams and trips. heaven sure is beautiful... and achievable here on earth but not at this stage in human evolution. Yea Civilization is a bitch. I mean that in saying your culture is forced upon you.. YOU ARE CULTURE. Culture is not this book type set of customs and rules for you to follow like everyone sees it. That just makes you a robot. You are programmed by your culture. It shouldn't be like that. I applaud anyone who denies their culture in place of their own.
