Building a new house...any good ideas regarding safety?
    #11435590 - 11/11/09 06:21 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys I'm in the process of building a new home. Any cool ideas regarding safety/security would be greatly appreciated.

A surveillance system is a must for me so wiring for that will be included.

I'm also definitely considering hidden wall safes for the hell of it. (why not they're cheap and good to store any kind of valuables)

I have to incorporate a place to store firearms as well...ideas welcome on that too.

Any good ideas would be greatly appreciated.

So basically what would be incorporated into your highly secured dream home guys?

A secret room underneath the basement/foundation.  Like a 'fallout shelter' of sorts.

Solar water heater.  Water Catchment.  Composting toilets.  Solar electricity.  Windmill (for milling grains).

Just some things I'll have on my house, when I get some land.

Get a chicken coop, too.  Nothing like fresh eggs every morning (or to give to friends at work), and some delicious chicken after a few months!  Plus the wake-up call.

Goat milking area, horse stable, barn, shed, garden...

Iono man.  Good luck.

Best advice that I can really give is:

"If you can't (make time to) do it right the first time, don't do it at all./" "/how're you going to find time to do it right a second time?"

Six foot high Security fence with locked gates and no trespassing signs posted in clear view every 20' or so.

The sky is the limit, really.. The only restraint is your funding. Depending on exactly what you want security from (trespassers? nosy neighbors? nuclear war? famine? drougt? police? hehe) there are literally infinite options available to you.

Regardless of any and all other choices, I still recommend the security fence. Six foot with barbed wire if at all applicable, also hang the no trespassing signs to keep any/all people (whether they be lawful or criminal) out both physically and legally (I'm pretty sure the no trespassing signs should offer you some protection from any entry without lawful consent depending on your locale).

Storing firearms? A reinforced concrete safe with a metal door or similar could of course be built, but again, it depends on your funds.

Throw at least a dog or two in with the security fence idea. The dog (if kept outside) is an auditory alarm that goes off before someone is even in your yard, much less your house. A camera wont even do that for you.

A fireplace also comes to mind, never know when something may need to be burned instead of thrown away.

Security fence, reinforced door built into the foundation, reinforced security windows, etc.

Steel reinforced exterior doors are cool.  They could bang on those things as long as they want but it would just be loud knocking.

all of the things you listed sound good.  wall safes and areas where baseboards can be removed or fake electrical outlets can be used to stash things as well, but any law enforcement conducting a raid will search there, know that.

down to some simple stuff, if you have alot of glass panels on your door, be sure to get locks that are keyed on both sides, or at least the main deadbolt.  if you are really security minded get a stainless steel door.

as for firearms, get a gunsafe.  they are REALLY heavy and can be bolted in so no one will steal them.  as long as its locked, you should be good.

do you have kids?  if you do, you should also consider them when setting up your house.  children love to get into things that are in low places.

windows are fairly easy to secure. i can draw you a diagram if you'd like, its kinda hard for me to type it out.

Good ideas on the doors and windows eveyone. It would be nice to have the whole house monitored by PC in some way. Yea dogs are just another layer of protection too.

I have a "how to hide anything" pdf from paladin press. some good ideas there but some are extremely ridiculous

What about an old school secret passage. Not only would it be great for any illegal's you have but how cool would it be to just pull a hidden lever and have a bookcase or wall swing open and lead to a secret room.

Make the whole thing out of steal beams and tons of rebar and 3' deep concrete walls at the bottom with a steal roof and shaped like a pyramid or dome. Then dig a huge moat and fill it with cottonmouth snakes and piranhas from a petstore

No this is a house coming along slowly due finances and trying to stay out of debt as much as possible...but I'm trying to plan wisely about my privacy, no crack house or anything but I'd like for my family to be safe and my private life kept private. It's under roof but not finished. I'm looking for unique ideas. Thanks

There are books out there on secret rooms, hidden compartments, etc..  I suggest you read one of them.

The best thing would be to have a hidden area for all your secret stuff.  And I mean really hidden.

I lived in a house with a secret door once.  I was just a book shelf built onto a door.  It was pretty damn secret except for the doorknob underneath one shelf (you could see it if you got low).

My idea was to build a secret door operated by a magnet or car keyfob. If you put some time into it you can construct something that nobody will find.

There was also a clandestine lab book I read which detailed battering ram proof doors.  The key thing is that it absorbs impact.  Even a steel door is only as strong as the frame and latch that holds it.  The key is to use valve springs (or some other spring) to hold the frame to the wall.  That way they keep battering it and the springs, rather than the door, frame, or wall absorb the force.  They can batter all day long and it just keeps springing back.

I'd also invest in a toilet type hookup with a garbage disposal rigged into it.  A toilet has a much larger drain pipe and equipped with a disposal you can run anything down it in short order.

Combined with a battering ram proof door you'd have plenty of time to dispose of everything, assuming you're in the house when they come knocking.

very nice info FF... I've read "how to hide anything" i think it was called ( I know it was a paladin press book) but a lot of it was outdated or extreme. Do you remember where you found the article for the door valve spring mod?

im going to go the pet store and ask for enough cottonmouth snakes and piranhas to fill a moat outside of a giant steel pyramid just for the reaction.

That's the book.  I think I downloaded it as an attachment somewhere here.  You can probably find it with some searching.
