Upstate SC Azurescens found!!!
    #11433597 - 11/11/09 02:12 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I'm a landscaper and i found 8.8g dried worth of beautiful damn near solid blue azurescens in front of a business in the grass just 2 days ago. Can anybody tell me if this is normal or if there is anything i can do to keep them coming up there?

Those are not Azurescens. They do not grow in SC naturally and its probably too warm for outdoor patch of azures in sc to fruit.

Without pictures of them fresh we cant tell you what they are.

These are the active mushrooms that grow in SC.

Gymnopilus junonius
Panaeolus cinctulus
Psilocybe cubensis
Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe caerulescens (rare)

The only one that would be growing out of grass is panaeolus cinctulus. However, your dried mushrooms are not panaeolus cinctulus.

It could be a range extension on psilocybe weilli or a stropharia species or something else.

Stopharia would be my guess to but he is saying it turned purple so that is kind of strange.

Some mushrooms can kill you or cause permanent liver damage.

I would not eat those considering they dont match any active species in SC.

Im still saying your friend is wrong if he says they are azures. Unless you somehow found someone outdoor cultivated patch. Even then i doubt a person would put their outdoor patch in a highly traveled area like that when they could just put them in their backyard.

If you want them to keep coming back then water them!

Good luck.

They are 100% not Psilocybe azurescens. If you want a proper ID, next time post pictures of habitat, fresh specimen AND spore prints.
However, I repeat, these are NOT Psilocybe azurescens.

Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata seems the most likely candidate IMHO.

here's a good question:

since i can't tell from the pictures, are you certain that's blue bruising and not purple coloration?

Djsmokeyb,
You can water the area to help them grow if its dry out, but dont flood it. Otherwise you just have to let nature run its course. If the temperature is right and its staying wet, you'll see more mushrooms.

Take some pictures of them growing if you can. We'd love to see some pictures of these fresh.

need to focus your shots. put it in macro mod and hold it like 10 inches away from the mush.

might be psilocybe, maybe storphiaria.
maybe ovoids??

Both P. azurescens and P. ovoideocystidiata grow on wood. These remind me of dried Tricholoma or Inocybe.

The very top cap with the dimple looks like some dried Tricholoma I once had. The only shot of the gills in that picture don't look like a dried Psilocybes gills.

The pictures are way to blurry to give a definite ID.

What color are the gills when fresh?

be careful dont eat them til you know for 1000% sure black bruising can sometimes look blue and some mushrooms if you eat them will kill you but you wont know anything for a few days after then your organs will just start failing just like new active variants appear in new places im sure poisonous variants do too so you can never be too sure

They do look like cubes... but the habitat doesn't make much sense unless it was in front of a feed store. Check again after a good rain and get them IDed and you're full of win. :mushroom2:

Until then, as others have said, don't touch that shit.

From the sounds of it, he's already eaten them and gotten high from it.
I don't doubt he's got psilocybes of some kind. Interesting that a university mycologist ID'ed them as Azures though....

Psilocybe azurescens

ya i dont think azures either.please get some pics in their natural habitat and some more pics of the freshly picked specimens.then a pic of the spore print.no one can tell from a dried mushroom exactly what it is.its hard enough identifying over a computer so as much info and pics you can get will help.
i wish i was a landscaper!
