Translating Translations.
    #11426211 - 11/10/09 03:23 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

So, this jake leg online decided it would be nice to let people know he thinks it's not evil to meditate.

You dont have to follow the link.
http://www.accuros.com/thornbush/pollen/ps63_6.htm

For his justification he uses Ps. 63:5-6.

I decided to look up the verse myself in different bible versions then different languages then have a non-biased translator, do the translations. Some of the translations were somewhat interesting, but the one that blew me away was the chinese translation. (babbelfish)

Ps. 63:5-6

Kings James Version.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.
When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.

International Version (note how the word meditate was omitted)
My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.

Gotta Love the Contemporary English Version (meditate omitted)
I will sing joyful praises and be filled with excitement
like a guest at a banquet.
I think about you
before I go to sleep,
and my thoughts turn to you
during the night.

And this was really interesting...

The Chinese Bible.
ÎÒ ÔÚ ´² ÉÏ Ó› Äî Äã £¬ ÔÚ Ò¹ ¸ü µÄ •r ºò ˼ Ïë Äã £» ÎÒ µÄ ÐÄ ¾Í Ïñ ï– ×ã ÁË ¹Ç Ëè ·Ê ÓÍ £¬ ÎÒ Ò² Òª ÒÔ šg ˜· µÄ ×ì ´½ ד ÃÀ Äã ¡£
ºÏ ºÍ ×g ±¾ ã Èë ÉÏ Ò» ¹

Translation per babbelfish.

I commemorate you on the bed, in the night of time thought you; My heart looked like the full fully marrow fat oil, I must praise you by the happy lip. Gathers merges on one with the translated edition.

I will leave ye to not draw your own conclusions.

I think translation is something that people just don't want to talk about.

The meaning of texts gets changed so significantly when someone translates it.

who do we trust to do our translating?

how often do people get books translated by multiple translators before deciding on a correct translation?

If a translation changes the meaning of a text, what good is it anymore? Everything based on translation should be taken loosely..
