"Cant I make it so that i shouldnt name it default.htm but index ?"

Try it, make a page, name it default.htm, upload it, then rename it to index.htm and see what happens.  Most web hosting compaines don't care.  Both will probably work.

"And can I 'shorten; the path, ( renaming the directories) and will it still work ?"

I don't know, probably not.  Web hosting companies setup their file directories "their way".  You'll be working mostly with the www folder.  When people go to your website, they will be directed to files within your www folder.  So you don't really need to shorten the path becuase you'll be the only one who needs to deal with it.  Does that make sense?

"Also If I upload a pic when I try to see it I cant."  Make sure the name of your pic hasn't changed.  For example.  if you have cat.jpg and you upload it, some web design programs (Dreamweaver) will change it to cat.JPG

There is a difference :smile:

So after you upload your pic, make sure that the pic name is the same as its written in the code of the page.

"Also I have no access to the main directory"

:smile:  Yes you do...
db
special
log
www

www. is your sites root directory, db is your database directory (MySQL probably).  log, is where all of your log files are stored (log files are used to see who's been on your site.  Marketing info if you want it).  special...??  I'm not sure what that would be.

Whenever you change a page after you've viewed it. You need to "REFRESH" your browser.

If you upload a new index page and its different than the old one, hit refresh on your browser. Your browser keeps the page in its cache file. This is a "feature" so that page will load faster.

Here's the solution to a web page trying to use the wrong default HTML... It's standard for most hosting providers, so it should work. If you've already fixed your problems - great, but I'll still post this for everybody who wants to know.

Check your 'www' directory for a file named '.htaccess' That's correct... a file named with nothing but a dot and an extension called 'htaccess'. If the file doesn't exist then you won't have to do as much work. Just open up Notepad or any other text editor and name a file '.htaccess' (no apostrophes) and then type the following into the text file:

DirectoryIndex index.html

The above assumes that you want your default file to be named index.html, otherwise simply replace 'index.html' with the name of your default file.

If a file named '.htaccess' already exists you must download it to your computer and edit it... Find the line which starts with 'DirectoryIndex' and replace the filename that follows it with the name of your file. I recommend you back up the original '.htaccess' file if you don't know what you're doing. Finally, a good tutorial on the different things you can do with the .htaccess file is located here: http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess.shtml

Edit: One more note... If you edit and reupload the .htaccess file make sure you upload in ASCII mode, not binary mode.

With howling woe,
After night I do croud
And with night will go;
I turn my back to the east,
From whence comforts have increas'd;
For light doth seize my brain
With frantic pain.

In regards to questions 1 and 2...

Those sound like web hosting issues.

To log onto ANY FTP site, you need the server name, user ID, and password.  For most FTP clients you can simply type in your doman name in the "server" feild.

Although, as for question 2, if you can't log in through a URL or any browser, your password may not be setup or its wrong.  I bet if you contact them (your webhosting company) and if they work with you on your password....  you'll solve both your problems. :smile:

Ond for the second: MY admin site is http://madfarmer.net/admin And at first when I got to this page, it said enter login and password. I have tried it from INternet Clubs and there it also doesnt work. I WIll email dem.
