Pumpkin seed spawn
    #11371533 - 11/02/09 06:14 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

With Halloween over I have an assload of pumpkin seeds that I am gonna try and use as spawn. Some are clean and dry and some are still pretty fresh. Can I go ahead and clean and use the fresh ones or should I let them completely dry out first before I hydrate and PC?

I was worried that fresh seeds wouldn't hydrate properly without being dries fully first. I thought I remembered reading a post a long time ago about someone using pumpkin seeds as spawn. I don't know. Its worth a shot, I have some LC to play with.

mmkay, well i doubt using fresh seeds will be a problem, actually i was kind of under the impression that dry seeds wont hydrate properly.
are you going to mix anything else within the substrate?

i wish i thought of that. :facepalm: i don't see any reason it woudn't work. i think drying them out first then hydrating would be a good idea. not roasted, just dried. that way it's kinda the same as any other grain prep. hydrate, PC, etc. there's a thread on every other seed, grain, berry, whatever.
do it.:super::goodluck:

The pumpkin seed is just for spawn. The substrate will be coir/straw(also from halloween decoration)/coffee/verm.

I don't think you should dry them. I think you should boil a little bit to remove the goo and then go for it.
But I doubt it will work. But hey- who knows?

Or if you dry some, you can make PF cakes (pumpkin flour).

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Update

I did them pretty much the same way I do WBS. I got a pot of water/coffee/pinch of gypsum boiling, removed it from the heat and poured in the pumpkin seeds. I let them sit about 1 hour. I drained them for about 1 hour. They looked good at this point so I put them in a quart jar with another pinch of gypsum and a tablespoon of verm and PC'd them for 1 hour. After they cooled I knocked them up with 2cc's of Brazil LC. 6 days later and they are  about 50% colonized. I am going to shake them tonight. The growth has been good so far and I don't see any reason they won't completely colonize. So...so far so good. I will remember this next year and save all my pumpkin seeds again. Anyone else who has some leftover pumpkins, get the seeds, clean them and use them! Why not, right?

its kewl i ran across this thread. i did the same thing with mine .. my wife made pumpkin soup i saved the seeds. they sat outside for about a week in a jar.. they were kinda moist. i put them in my wheat \wbs mix and used them too.. i havn't checked the jars, but they always colonize. and with just some extra spawn in there it will be good. i make 7 to 8 quarts spawn at a time and i just used about 1 pint of pumpkins seeds.

People wanting pics are in luck. I took these a couple days after the myc really started growing. The verm I added mostly stuck to the sie of the jar and obscure it some but you can see the myc okay. I will update it later with newer pics. One is the pumpkin seeds next to a WBS jar.
