Seed Loaf ??
    #1142276 - 12/15/02 06:21 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I know this will sound strange, and i honestly doubt there would be a practical application for it. But i figured i would just put it out there and let other people decide.

I found this stuff at the grocery store yesterday, it appears to be a loaf of pressed seeds. Ingredients:

Whole kernel rye,
Water,
Wholemeal rye,
Wholemeal wheat,
Oat flakes,
Barley flakes,
Linseed,
Non-iodised salt,
Yeast

It looks like a perfect substrate!
Except for the yeast. If Pressure cooking would destroy the yeast, it would work.

Yeah i bet it would work too, but since its pressed together you know you will have to crumble it so its not a big brick anymore. and i dunno if salt will hurt anything, maybe if its too much it could, the yeast would ferment all to hell so id pc that stuff to try killin it like the other guy said

i wonder about the salt content too ,though most soils have trace amounts of salt .does the label give the %  ?

but i am more concerned about linseed/flax . linseed oil is a preservative .

this is from http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/f/flax--23.html

"Crushed linseed of good quality usually contains from 30 to 35 per cent of oil.
Linseed oil rapidly absorbs oxygen from the air and forms, when laid on in thin layers, a hard, transparent varnish. It is largely used in the arts for its properties as a drying oil. It is a viscid, yellow liquid, its chief constituent being Linolein. It also contains palmitin, stearin and myristin, with glyceride of linoleic acid. Boiled oil, produced by heating raw linseed oil to a temperature of 150 degrees C., together with a small proportion of a metallic drier, possesses the drying properties of linseed oil to an enhanced degree. It becomes of a brown colour and dries much more rapidly, and in this state is used in the manufacture of printer's ink."

it should be tried though ,maybe just a few cakes at first ,along side some others ,like brf & millet for comparison . then you won't be putting all your eggs in the same basket .

that would be a very interesting grolog .

good luck ,i love experimenting

I think it would be a waste of time and money.

You have to soak the thing in water...so its gonna turn into loose seed and not be a brick any more....defeating the loaf part.

Plus i bet that regular birdeed is alot cheaper.

Don't be concerned about the flax...
I just innoculated 4 jars with a new whole grain cereal I found, that contains whole and cracked flax seed...It is 1/4 colonized after 4 days....
I posted about it in MUSHROOM CULTIVATION...
