Where/when/how did eating disorders become an issue?

I could google this I know but I'd prefer to tickle peoples knowledge in here.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the psychology behind many cases who from suffer from eating disorders is they are so self conscious and worried about their weight/how they look that their perception of themselves becomes completely warped and they see themselves as someone totally different i.e. skinny girls suffering from anorexia see themselves as pudgy and so on...
Obviously media has a lot to do this, models are constantly getting thinner and we are led to believe that this is normal and what was once considered thin is now not so thin.
Young impressionable girls see these wafer thing women in magazines and judge themselves and their standards on them.
I could go on more but I won't. I want to hear what you people know.
I feel it must be a product of Western society and how twisted this world is getting although I don't know.
How recent did the first case come to light?

I'd say it began with the 70's and was exacerbated by the 80's glam culture.

Really? That's crazy if it is. I would've thought earlier.
If that's so,in 50 years there's going to be many more disorders as the media get more ruthless/in your face pushing it's message.
Who/what are thought to be the original main causes of its coming about?

I'm pretty sure some people such as the very wealthy and kings back in medieval times probaly over ate to a disorder level until they died or drowned in a barrel of wine etc...
I can't imagine anorexia though

People have always done weird things from time to time, but mass media promotes mass hysteria. Plus, if you tried it back in the day, you'd just have died.

I think recently it started in the Victorian Era, with corsets and all that being invented. In the medieval era and all that, guys liked a little meat, it was a sign of wealth and status and whatnot, in an age when most people were poor as dirt.
Of course if you go back further to Roman times when things were good, they had eating disorders then too, so I think it's just an issue with peak society.

I think it also has to do with the way food is looked at sometimes...
for example, comfort food, and also things like candy being a reward for good behavior.
not great ways to view food, in my opinion

My cousin has an eating disorder (I'm not sure which one though). It all started when her and her friends got into cheerleading. And instead of changing their diet and eating healthier to stay in shape, they decided binge eating and then puking it up would be the better option. It got so bad they sent her ass to out-patient rehab for it and shit (she got down to like 89lbs and still thought she was severely over weight). She can't even use the bathroom alone at her house anymore cause my aunt and uncle don't trust her (but in a way it's kinda their fault always calling her fat, disgusting, a pig, and so on when she was younger--and she wasn't even fat). Every time we get together at my Grandma's and eat, we know she goes and pukes afterwards cause she won't close the cap on the mouthwash all the way so we won't hear the click.
It's gotten so bad that I think it's gone from a disorder to a fetish. Cause one time my aunt grounded her and searched her room and found all these plastic bags full of puke and food hidden in her closet and draws and shit. And her cellphone is full of pictures of barf in bags and toilets and shit. Her and her friends even text each other pictures of their puke and weight it and shit. It's seriously FUCKED up.
I've try'd to approach her about it, but I really don't know where to begin. I love her, but you can't help someone who doesn't want it.

"I'm holding my gut when the rush hits, it's subtle at first--the worst is done This ain't nothing, until my blood is pumping, shit hits like percussion And the club suddenly changes into something it wasn't..."

And that's how you know it's a disorder and not just a personality quirk. Eating disorders are un-sane.

Eating disorders have been around for centuries. It has recently become more widespread due to affluence (poor people without any food would never willingly starve themselves).
There have been some famous examples of eating disorders. Sissy, the Empress of Austria, starved herself religiously. She spent most of her time in her gymnastics room trying to work off the extra calories.
Anywhere and anytime women have been expected to be thin, they've starved themselves to do it.
Edit: I feel bad about my body all the time. I'm very thin and well-proportioned, but I have areas of myself that I sometimes wish I could just cut off with a butcher knife. I never feel comfortable with my body and always cover the areas I don't like, even when I'm asleep.
If I was crazy enough, I'd totally starve myself. I've tried, but my mind is too healthy to be neurotic enough to overcome my hunger. That, and I just absolutely LOVE food. I still try to diet every day so I don't gain any weight and I work out, but that doesn't really help anything.
Onetime I had a serious pill habit and became about 30 pounds underweight. I still wasn't happy with my weight. If I could I'd probably starve myself right down to a skeleton. I'm lucky my mind won't allow me to be so self-harming. If I had some kind of trauma in my past it might be different.

WHy would you do that to yourself? I mean, I seriously can't understand the psychology behind it. (I'm not refering to you personally, obviously I know nothing about you) But I don't see how people can be sickingly skinny, and have people tell them they are unhealthy and (ironically) in their quest to become 'beautiful', have turned them selves into a horrifying stick monster who's sickening to even look at, and STILL think they're overweight and need to loose more (after it's already become clear that weightloss is the problem). A majority of these people where normal beautiful people already, why the need to destroy yourself? (then again, I just realized people always ask me this question when refering to drugs. So I guess it's kind of the same, only I'm not really hurting myself).
I guess it's different for me cause I know someone who's living with it, but to actually WANT something like that is just pure fucking insanity imo.

Theres a whole range of mental disorders that have come out of modern living, not that they didn't exist before but that in the western world we are in the position to be able to easily take on such disorders of the mind. Food and idealist appearance stereotypes are abundant and certainly the cause for the increase in eating disorders.
Pressure for conformity of appearance is one of the saddest and disgusting aspects of the human race. I remember being beaten up by a gang as a kid for having a certain hat on. Even back then I remember thinking why are these people so stupid. Do they not think at all and just act like apes?
