how to encourage/hide a patch of cyans?
    #11419371 - 11/09/09 04:23 PM (8 years, 10 days ago)

I've managed to find a small patch of cyans growing very close to my workplace in PDX.  They are right on the edge of a trail where many folks can see them though I'm not sure that anyone but me knows what they really are.

A found them early last week as the rains here were letting up.  I harvested the mature ones and left the pins.  On Friday I went to inspect them and decided to cover them with some leaves to keep them from being so obvious and maybe to keep them from drying out between the rains.

Today I went to check them again and see that a good number of the small and medium sized ones are melting/rotting a bit.  Not sure if that is because they were babies during the few days of sunshine or because I covered them with leaves.  A few had been munched on, by slugs I assume, but most were in good shape other than they were rotting.

Will they grow big and healthy while completely covered with leaves?  What can I do or not do to encourage them to grow and spread while keeping them slightly obscured from the many people who walk past them every day?

Most people aren't looking for shrooms but just in case you might want to throw a few dried up branches over them so they're obscured. The leaves won't stop their growth at all, I've found many mushrooms growing up under leaves. You never know when other mushroom hunters are watching though so be discreet if you're moving a bunch of branches all over the place :tinfoil:

The branches are a good idea, there is plenty of decaying wood in the area so maybe I'll move some a bit.  Though this trail gets maintained fairly well so I'm sorta afraid that covering this patch with branches will result in the patch being disturbed next time someone comes through to clear excess fallen limbs.  The cyans are growing in chips that cover a good portion of the well-maintained trail.  It just happens that the right chips were placed at the base of an alder tree.  Now these little guys are growing out of some of the fallen alder branches and have spread to the woodchips.

For all those asking me to divulge my new favorite hiking trail I'm really sorry but no-can-do.  Gimmie a year to get a patch started in my back yard then maybe I'll talk.

you can also take home some colonized chips, or the stipe ends and place them between layers of damp cardboard.

keep the cardboard damp and let colonize, then 'plant' that cardboard in new beds, or other likely looking deposits of woody debris [twigs in the floor litter of a local park] at your leisure.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Yeah, ditto on Portland being dry. I've traversed a great, great number of parks. However, I'm determined to set out West tomorrow and look there.

good luck, and that's all the more reason to encourage new colonies.
