can't keep the temp up in my SG FC--ideas?
    #11419159 - 11/09/09 03:53 PM (8 years, 10 months ago)

Using a SG FC as detailed in RR's videos but the ambient temp in the room I have it sitting in is only ever around 65 degrees.  Other than heating the whole room (which isn't an option unless I buy a space heater or something), does anyone have an idea of what I can do?  Thnking that I could build another TiT incubator using a fish heater and then put the SG FC in there, raised up on the bottom for the air to be able to be drawn up through the perlite.  But seems I've read somewhere on here that in order for the SG FC to work effectively, you can't keep it in an enclosed area. Ideas?

Nothing wrong with 65 Degrees, but you could raise the temp slightly with a heating pad under it... I'd just fruit it at 65 though.

cheers

yeah there is its 10 degrees off the optimum fruiting temperature ... but yes a reptile aquarium heating pad , even the smallest ones would get you up to about lower 70s and get things going a bit faster ... otherwise you re going to be spending an extra week or so waiting for harvest ... gl

If he's doing P. Cubensis, the optimal temperature for primordia & reproductive formation (Fruiting) is 70-72 Degrees F.
If the temperature is 65 Degrees F. there will be no dramatic differences in fruiting.

Research in Mycology also suggests that in lower temperatures the fruit bodies of the mycelium in p. cubensis (the mushrooms) will be more dense and some argue more potent as well.

This mini heater is interesting in that it doesn't have a setpoint, it just takes its water bath up 5 to 10 degrees above ambient (depending on how much water its in)  So you could either make a heatbomb in a bottle or tupperware, or lay it in your perlite or something:
http://www.aquariumguys.com/miniheater.html

I'm using it for a heatbomb in my incubator and it works perfectly to keep the air temperature at about 76 degrees F.

Seedling mat under the FC. Most take the temp up 10-20 degrees. If it's too much, just put some spacer underneath.
