Inoculating a Jar with Several Different Sub-strains
    #11418585 - 11/09/09 02:33 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

What would happen if you inoculated a jar with 10 different sub-strains with .5 CC of spore solution each? Like B+, Burma, Ecuador, Golden Teacher, Mazatapec, PES Amazonian, Penis Envy, Treasure Coast, Menace, Colombian. I guess one would have to trump all the rest.
Which One Would Win?
You may choose only one
B+
Burma
Ecuador
Golden Teacher
Mazatapec
PES Amazonian
Penis Envy
Treasure Coast
Menace
Colombian

I have no idea.

First things first.  Mushrooms strains don't 'compete' with each other.

Second, as said above, an isoate is an isolate.  It will be one organism.

If you have several strains active in a jar of grains, most will combine into a single organism via the process of anastomosis.(Google it)  The others will fruit as separate strains, but won't be 'competing for nutes' as we hear the noobs constantly saying.  In fact, I've shot several strains deliberately into a single jar to watch what happens.  Most combine, but now and then you get a substrate with obviously different genetics in the fruiting bodies.  For example, you might have several large solo mushrooms, while the rest of the substrate is covered with smaller fruits coming from clusters.  Usually however, the difference between strains is so minimal that you'll never notice.

Shaking the jar won't cause the non-compatible strains to join forces.  The similar mycelium will re-connect with like mycelium.  The entire concept of 'strain' in the OMC is vastly overrated.  It's nothing like in mj, where the strain determines everything.  Remember, fungi are not plants.  Perhaps an analogy, since most 'strains' seem to be named for where they were collected is to consider a man from Chicago (Chicago strain), getting married to a woman from New York (New York strain).  The genes from the two strains combine, rather than fight.

the one that will win will just be the strongest of the samples and will probly  be different every time.

There would be too much moisture and a better chance of it contaming

Way too many spores, you'd get a clusterfuck of a grow out of that.

Less is more. Use the fewest spores possible. Two, ideally.

someone with a healthy spore inventory should do this experiment.

There's no need. It's not an experiment, it's just goofing around with spores. You've got spores, give it a try.

I am willing to do it right now.  I got some jars of rye ready and have been deciding what to inoculate with

True, but your missing the point here. What if the spore to substrate ratios were proportional to a single strain inoculation?

inoculating jars with multiple syringes will most likely produce generic looking cubes that will most likely act like generic looking cubes. given that they are all multispore inoculations, your results will look like cubes, act like cubes, and behave like...well, cubes.
