I have 2 questions....
    #11418060 - 11/09/09 01:09 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Question 1:
I have these lights a friend gave me and I wanted to know if I could get some input on what people think about using these for growing. Here is a link to the site of witch has a description for them, link! They say full spectrum on the box so I figured hey they would probability be great but I didn't know if the fact that they are reptile lights would effect anything. Well I figure they will emit heat but if I elevate them above the terrarium I figure that would be ok for them to. So any input on these bulbs for growing? I figure full spectrum should be ok for mushrooms but I could be wrong.

Question 2:
I was looking at my jars and noticed that one of the five slow movers has a white fuzz coming out of the dry verm on top, I would compare it to soap suds. Thing about it is that when you touch it is is solid so I think it is fine. I don't have any other jars with this happening, well at least out of the 5 slow movers, so is it fine? I think I am just tweaking myself out with this but there is a picture below of what it looks like. Like I said it is solid to the touch but theirs still a thin layer of fluff over that solidness, so is this just mycelium growing through the dry verm? I mean this jar was a little over hydrated from the start so maybe that effected it somehow?

It looks like it says full spectrum, I'd just buy a CFL, it's cheap. Get a daylight variety bulb. The myc looks ok, as long as the jar looks finely colonized in other parts of the jar and rate of growth was normal.

most full spectrum fluorescents are 5500K.. these are for reptiles so their only concern is UVB/UVA .. but regular use full spectrum florescents are listed at 5500K

Alright well then I guess I was tweaking myself out over the growth through the dry verm. The growth rate of growth was normal as far as the rate for it and the rest of the slow ones, plus they are pretty colonized now so I am confident now. The light on the other hand is a full spectrum. So as far as what kelvin the bulbs are I have no idea. They really don't say at all on anything including the box and instructions that were included. But in my mind I figure full spectrum is adequate for growing as it would cover the kelvin scale, or at least it shows a chart on the box that would make me believe that.

I get that white fuz on my jars all the time, just the mycelium growing through the verm. As for the lights, I hear that uv can damage the mycelium and cause mutations.
Regular flourecent bulbs from the dollar store work fine. But Im sure that one will work fine too. Good luck!

I dont know if these pictures will make or break anything but I took a picture of the light while on. The reason behind it is because I have had 10000, 7500 and 6000 kelvin bulbs in my car and this bulb looks somewhere around 7000. I am not proclaiming to be able to be able to tell exact kelvin temps with my eyes but in comparison as to what it looked like in my vehicle I would say less than 7500 for sure and a little more than 6000. These two pictures I took were with diffrent color balances on my camera, the first one is with a incandescent preset and the other is with a fluorescent preset. There is a difference in the pictures using these settings as the bulb is fluorescent, not incandescent. The color of the bulb in person looks very close to the second fluorescent picture.

incandescent preset:

Sounds worthwhile. If you were buying new, CFL would be cheaper. But since you have this, try it out.

most florescent bulbs labeled as "full spectrum" are trying to replicate "noon time day light" and 5500K is considered the standard for that. I think the 5500K is just fine.. odds are for these bulbs that it is more in that range. However, they have been made any where from 5000K - 6500K.. and still use the term full spectrum. But, most that reach into the 6500K range are replicating desert light, and are usually stamped with the term "desert".. (as far as reptile lights). So, your guess may be close. I would use them.

Thanks for the read Herbal_Elixer. I am thinking these lights are safe to use, maybe just over optimistic but confident none the less. My buddy who gave them to me said hes used them for a budda grow and they were good performers for the plants they were on. So I am kind of looking for the same review when I am done with them.
