question on brf verm cakes
    #11417451 - 11/09/09 09:12 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Things have been going well thus far I knocked up 10 1 qt widemouth jars  on Oct. 20th using the R.R. video tek. the jars were rapidly colonizing untill recently the slowed way down. As a matter of fact I finally got 1/2 pint jars that are going to be ready soon they were knocked up 2 weeks after the 1 qt jars. I know that the 1 qt jars were not recommended but that was all I could get at the time. Is their any thing I can do besides wait to get the 1 qt jars going again thanks for any in put..

Wait it out. Either they will finish or they won't.

Edit- those jars are super sweet for grain, btw.

I've never heard of using qt jars for BRF cakes. I did mine with 1 pint jars and I barely birthed them. It took approx. 5-6 fully colonize. I'd say wait it out like DOC-T said. But it might take a while to see fully colonized qt jars.
Also contams are more likely to appear with anything above 1/2 pint jars due to its slow progess.
Keep us updated on how that goes. I'm curious to see how qt jars work with BRF cakes.

I doubt a quart jar of brf will ever fully colonize because there's no way for air to penetrate deep into the packed substrate.  You're probably going to want to scoop out the colonized parts, wash off any uncolonized brf, and use it to spawn to manure or coir, straw, etc.  Pint jars are lame enough for pf tek.  Quart jars are a no-go.

I've had success with pint jars but they are very slow compared to 1/2.

I just ordered some qt jars and will be on my way to get a 23 qt PC as well as some grains.  I think it's worth the investment.
