Stereo is essential.

I had to live with having a decent system in mono for a few months because I am a broke musician.  I just got my new audio interface that allowed me to get Stereo sound going.

I am now re-listening to all my music.  TREMEDOULY better.

Definitely. Having multiple channels of sound can have a dramatic effect on a listening experience.

The difference a 5.1 (or 6.1) home theatre system make in watching a movie is incredible as well.

Wonder how important 5.1 is when producing?  I mean, how many people really listen to their music in 5.1?

Probably very few.

In fact, for music I switch out of 5.1, and into stereo.  I think some types of "concert DVD's" may be in 5.1.
