Another Honduras ID Please (Giants!)
    #11412362 - 11/08/09 06:37 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Hi -

I was given these by a local who says they are "magic".  I have never seen such a giant "active" mushroom.

I will try to get more information from him when I seem him again about where he got them - but I figure from the photos alone someone should be able to recognize these.

Active/Inactive - He tells me other people eat them.. Also curious about dosage...

Thanks!

Can you identify what I have though?

Let me know what additional information I can provide.

They are about 5" tall and range from 7" to 10" wide for the cap.

i cant id them. Someone might recognize them by site. When i first saw them i was thinking Tricholoma species but i dont think thats right.

You might want to fill out an id request if you want more people to help.
(habitat, sporeprint, etc...)

I thought I did fill out an ID request...

I can't tell much about where they came from as I didn't find them.  I can tell you they are in a tropical environment (island off the coast of Honduras)- it had been dry and then rained for days on end.  Does not look like they came from manure.  I will try to get more information tomorrow on where they came from - but they look rather distinct to me due to their size.  But perhaps it is just because I have never seen mushrooms this large.

I will try to do a spore print... Not sure how to accomplish that on such a large cap.

Thanks for the feedback!

Interesting mushrooms.  Maybe something from Clitocybe or Leucopaxillus.  Definitely not a psilocybin containing species - There are no known psilocybin mushrooms with white gills.

Its possible that they are slightly toxic and that makes people feel high, but more likely he is bullshitting you.  Hopefully its a known edible species...

Yes, for sure.

Spore print color agrees with Clitocybe.

There are no active species in Citocybe, but some have muscarine, which is a poison that can make people feel high if they eat just a little and really sick if they have more.
