First mono with h/poo sub-Some Pin Porn Pics Updated 29/11

Hi all, this is my first attempt at using a monotub with h/poo sub. I've got 11 fully colonised jars of grain, holding 2 jars back for g2g transfer, so will be spawning 9 jars to 3.5 lbs of sub. I will be layering the sub 5 layers h/poo with 4 layers of spawn, the spawn jars hold a pint, 2 jars to 3 layers & the 4 layer will be 3 jars.
Jars 100% colonised
My poo pasteurizing
This is my sub mix for a 4" depth
2.75 lbs off well aged dry h/poo 1.5 floz (44mls) veg oil 12 oz verm 15 oz spent coffee grinds, thx starbucks 6 oz gypsum
Total weight 3.6 lbs (58 oz) = 5 layers @ 12 oz each. Pasteurizing for 2 hours @ 170 using pillow cases.
Pic of monotub
I'm gonna be adding the spawn tomorrow.
Any comments on my sub mix would be welcome, not sure if Ive got the amounts right for the additives, weight ratios.
Thanks.

looks great. what strain? how long did it take for your jars to colonize? multispore or lc?
also.. i think hpoo has alot of nitrogen already. if you are adding 15 oz of coffee that means 26% of your total sub will be coffee. i think if your coffee is that high along with already having high nitrogen it might be over kill. plus. if i had 9 quarts of spawn i would be making 3 monotubs.

Keepers, print from my last grow. 5 jars got 2.5cc, they took 2 wks & the rest got 1.5 & they took a wk longer. You could be right on the coffee, think I might have got the quantity of a post giving the mix for coir. Sure I read a post that said it was possible to spawn straight to coffee, i've read that many latley I could be wrong. Would appreciate any info tho, if it is overkill on the coffee is there any way of bringing the nitrogen content down?

Using layers is not a great idea. If you mix it evenly it will colonize faster and more evenly. Layers open the possibility that sections wont colonize evenly and that may prolong fruits for a couple weeks. I don't get why people are trying to re-invent the wheel. Mix it well, 3-4 days after being covered it's ready for the FC...

I've read quite a few things that suggest layering encourages vertical myc growth and avoids overlay.

I'd also read that alot of people had successfull grows using this method thats why I thought I'd give it a go. Can anyone help me out on the nitrogen problem, have I added to much coffee to my sub? I wanna get my mono up & running tomorrow but don't wanna go mixing my spawn if my subs fucked up.

I have to disagree. Numerous professionals, including Stamets, encourage layering spawn and substrate. Manual mixing also has the possibility of damaging your grains, exposing them to competitor molds.
Pinning won't occur until you have full colonization, regardless.

Probably. You should really only use coffee grinds at ~10% by volume.

Defo gonna layer. Is there a way of measuring the Nitrogen content, will it affect the ph, if so I could do a ph test or could I bring it down with a neutralising agent of some kind?

Just read a post by RR, says you can add as much coffee as you have available to your sub. I'm gonna do a ph test once my subs cooled down but the chances are it's gonna be acidic, I can add calcium carbonate to bring the ph up but how do I do this now I've pasteurized? Thanks for replys so far.

I've just done a search on the ph of subs, 4 to 6 and no adjustment for h/poo, I didn't realise that mushies prefer lower ph. I've just tested the poo water that I've kept for soaking my grains next time & got a reading of 6 so I guess I'll go ahead & spawn my bulk tomorrow.

I've tried it both ways. I always layer now. Seems to be better.

Thx, seems a real shame to have to shake the jars with them looking so good, it's my second time using grain & the first jars I did didn't look half as Rhizomorphic but they were knocked up using a few cc's I had left over from a purchased multispore syringe, they were a bit mean with the spore content, still worth the 12 quid I payed tho.

These jars were inoculated from a print I got of my last grow, made up 2 10cc syringes using the whole print, I know I could've made a few more outta the 1 print but both syringes were real dark where as the purchased multispore was clear & you had to look real hard to see the spores, I just assumed this might be the reason for the jars colonising so well this time or maybe one of the factors anyway.
