Virus
    #11408568 - 11/07/09 10:59 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone willing to help a brother out with a PC virus?

Whatever I have is not allowing me to search anything using a search engine. I can pull up links (shroomery) but I am unable to search for how to get rid of this thing.

It says "looking up search-gala.com" when I attempt searches. Any clues? I believe it also corrupted my windows system defender.

An explanation of how to terminate it, or a link would work equally as well.

Thanks is advance.

after bragging about not having a virus in a few years and being without a
virus scanner, I managed that one, I fought it for a couple of weeks
before I finally formatted, it places 2 files that cannot be removed even
through dos... formatting really is your only option

-uninstall your web browser
-run virus scan (spybot is good)
-run ccleaner (registry scan/fix) 3 times (it sometimes misses some)
-restart computer
-reinstall web browser
(be sure to download web browser installation file beforehand)

that usually works.

something similar happened to me.  i downloaded the virus in a movie file.

what fixed it for me was a program called combofix.  it worked,  but it can royally fuck up your computer if you do it wrong.

if he goes the linux path, i'd suggest dual-booting.  ubuntu live cds make it easy as fuck if you've already got windows installed.  i'm dual-booting a tiny version of xp and a version of ubuntu netbook remix called Linux4One on my netbook.

each OS has ~10gb partitions, then a 2gb swap partition for the linux OS, then a large ~95gb FAT32 partition that both systems recognize where i keep media and whatnot.  for some reason, i just can't get certain things to work on my linux system, so it's good to have the XP in case things aren't working (for example skype just won't work on linux for me; also, there's no stable chrome release for linux yet)

It seems like you downloaded some spamware and got hijacked to search gala.com

I've noticed that all spyware/spamware removal nowadays is just spyware/spamware itself.
