pf tek, what do you think?
    #11408716 - 11/08/09 01:48 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I can't find the half pint wide mouths to do the pf tek.  I got the one pint wide mouths.  I can't see why that wouldn't be just as good.

In previous go arounds, my half pints would colonize very quickly (like, two weeks max), and that was with multispore solution.  So I'm thinking that in optimum conditions the one pints would go just as fast, not giving contams a chance.  What do you guys think?

Really?  I'd use twice as much solution as with the half pints.  If it is longer, I wouldn't think by much.  I guess I'll find out soon.

I'd recommend plastic over glass.

See my sig for details.

I used pint jars my first ever run. Matzatapec. apparently, very contam resistant. Have taken over a month to be nearly colonized though; WAY longer. no tap no foil no stupid incubater either.

Order half pints on line. I like the plastic half pint jars actually, from mycosupply.

Always used an incubator set at about 83 degrees F.  Results have been very fast colonization.

It's been decided that room temp 70-75 is best for colonization.

I've never waited longer than two weeks for full colonization at 83, for two solid years.  That makes my decision. Now that was with half pint jars.

A quick search will reveal that pint jars colonize much more slowly than 1/2 pints, fruit with less than twice the yield, and have a much higher rate of contamination due to the long colonization period.  If you're doing pf/brf teks, stick to 1/2 pint wide mouth jars.  If you're not finding them, go someplace besides walmart or order online.  I live in the middle of BFE and can find 1/2 pint jars within an hour drive, in at least five different places.

I think those particular jars are harder for city dwellers to find, for whatever reason. Maybe they just sell out faster.
But none of my local places have any widemouth halfpints left, even if they still have other sizes.
(I only bought one pack this year, it's not my fault.)

Edit-
I bet it is a city/country thing. Many stores will get the variety pack- a pallet with so many cases of this size and so many cases of that one.
Country canners can food for real, they use up the quarts and half gallons but leave the little widemouths behind.
City folk are the opposite- we can little batches of jam and such, and half pints are great. We buy those and leave the bigger jars.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

I live in the city and even though there's easily a dozen grocery stories within a 5-10 minute drive only 1 or 2 of them actually carry canning supplies consistently and even then they only stock 1-2 cases of any particular size/style at a time.

I found some half pints today.  Not the short wide ones but the short skinny ones.  They are tapered, they look like some of you guys' pics that I thought were pint sized.  Anyway, that's cool I'll use them instead since cambos aren't here yet.  I'm still gonna experiment with 2 of the pint sized jars simply because I'm curious. Thanks guys.
