Is Absinthe worth the price?
    #11408697 - 11/07/09 11:42 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

well i was planning on ordering some absinthe for xmas time.. Mail order prolly because everything in stores has been shit..

but anyone try it??

is it any different than a strong liqueur? or does the thujone and herbs add any extra effects?

update - in the process of finding the right absinthe to order....

ive been looking around..i want high levels of thujone and preferably over 50-80 proof.

there was a few that had good reviews and seem good.

i guess i want to personally find out if all the hoopla is true and if it is indeed slightly psychoactive.

and the ones i was interested in were atleast 50 bucks or more.

i have Suisse-Vert, Pernod, and Kubler in my kitchen right now.

i pay about $60~70 per bottle.

it works out cause you dilute it with water 3 to 5 times. not that much in the end.

my fav is probably Kubler. its still has that very absinthe-y taste but just a little bit more of a bite to it.. spicey almost.

thujone really doesnt matter. there is a lot more interesting flavors to keep me coming back to it.

also, absinthe is not something you want to be drinking in large amounts. you will definitely get sick if you really try to throw down. you drink absinthe cause its a nice drink, not to get wasted. its a cordial. like a desert drink.

not really. there isnt anything about it thats totally crazy. i find when im drinking absinthe its a little more mellow, relaxed kind of intoxication. that could just be the mood though. i really only drink absinthe on a chill night. it doesnt lend itself very well to keggers

thats about it though.. youre not going to be seeing things when you drink it.

where are you ordering this from? you dont need to have it shipped from SW. i buy it in philly at the local liquor store. usually you can just ask them to order it for you.

usually i dont trust anything that advertises the amount of thujone. it seems like its a lot more of a gimick.

i had Vert-Suisse and Kubler the last time i was in geneva. thats what got me hooked. i highly recommend both. Pernod is very good also, i just prefer the others. Lucid is shit (they fall into the gimick-y category). i cant remember the names of anything else ive seen in the store. there is probably more crap out there than quality stuff. read reviews before you get anything.

Czech Absinthe is the least regulated.

As far as thujone content - from my understanding, if the absinthe had enough thujone in it for you to have any sort of noticeable effect, you would probably pass out first from the booze. As stated above, enjoy it more as something special and do the whole ritual (slotted spoon, sugar cube, etc.)

I plan on doing it some day when I have the cash.

waste of money imo.  i think the taste is disgusting and it didn't have any of the purported effects.  plus it gave me a god awful hangover.

meh.

yeah talk to the guys at your local store before you order anything.

its a very nice drink for christmas time sitting around the table just relaxing. keep in mind though that most people really dont like it . its a little bit of an aquired taste. i dont know many others that like it.

EDIT: see what i mean  hehe

as for the ritual of it, try it out and see what works best for your taste. i dont usually add sugar and my water has to be really cold. others want sugar and warm water. its up to you.

in the old days you would order absinthe, the server would bring you a glass with absinthe, a spoon, sugar cube, and a water fountain. it was left to you to decide how you take it.

this is the type of fountain used:

oh also, dont worry about the color. not all absinthe is green. Kubler, for instance, is a clear liquor until you add the water. as you add it you see the louche and it will turn cloudy white.

The taste is really bad. Shots almost make me throw up. Although there are ways to prepare it so it tastes good. Particularly good in cocktails. Best quality it has is that it gets you completely smashed very quickly. Best absinthe Ive tried was Russian. It wasn't green, it was actually black and almost thick. Loaded with wormwood. There did seem to be something other drunkenness going on as well. A kind of nice relaxing effect which could of been the wormwood.

i like the ritual of it. it is def a different type of drink. you cant approach it the same way.

healthy body, healthy mind.

and yeah i would expect shots would make you throw up. hehe. if youre not going to dilute it then sip it from a brandy snifter. take it slow and enjoy yourself.

from the wiki:
The principal botanicals are grande wormwood, green anise, florence fennel, petite wormwood (Artemisia pontica or Roman wormwood), hyssop, melissa, star anise, angelica, sweet flag, dittany, coriander, veronica, juniper, and nutmeg.

its a very earthy taste to it. more like youre drinking nature. if that makes any sense. hehe.. tough to describe.

If you have to mix your liquor to stomach it then you are drinking crap, which is ok if you want a cheap buzz but you dont want to throw down bank on a bottle just to hide its taste with juices and sodas.

try and order one of these:
http://www.feeverte.net/guide/country/france/jade_verte_suisse_65/

http://www.feeverte.net/guide/country/switzerland/kuebler_57/

kubler should be a little cheaper. you should really only be looking at $70. i wouldnt spend more unless youre sure what youre getting is a solid product.

EDIT: i was never really a fan of mixed drinks. and not just with absinthe. ill take it like it is 99% of the time.

NOOOOOOO!!!!

THAT IS THE BIGGEST POOP THERE IS!!  For the love of God do not buy that shite! It is the most expensive of them all, and you might as well be drinking dishwashing detergent. Its not even a real Absinthe. Please NO!!

Drinking "king of spirits" is to drinking Absinthe is like
Drinking Listerine mouthwash is to drinking 15yo single malt whiskey.
I kid you not! its not even an absinthe and it tastes like having your cat vomit in your mouth - after having paid top dollar.

What you need good Sir is a repost of my "Absinthe Buyers & Drinkers Guide" thread:

========================================================

Video on how to drink Absinthe (auto download)

The market is saturated with all sorts of crap at sometimes outrageous prices. It is important to realize that a lot of "Absinthes" you can buy quite often have nothing to do with real Absinthe. Here's advice on which kinds to buy, at what price, and how to prepare it. The preparation is detailed in the attached video.

OK, here goes.

Absinthe can be bought in bottles of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 liter.

For liters, you can expect to pay $50-$150. Since a serving of absinthe before dilution measures 20-30ml, this boils down to $1-$5 per glass.
Here are brands that come highly recommended:

DUPLAIS (Balance, Verte, Blanche)
FRANCOIS GUY
HELFRICH (Verte, La Blanche)
JADE (Edouard, Nouvelle Orleans, PF 1901, Verte Suisse)
LA VALOTE (Bovet, Fornoni, Martin)
LASALA (spanish Absenta, can be had for $35/liter)
SEGARRA (spanish Absenta)
UN EMILE 68 (also their La Blanche)
VERSINTHE (Verte and especially La Blanche)
VERTE DE FOUGEROLLES

These 20 Absinthes from 10 houses all are top notch quality, contrary to the extensive list of crappy or even false Absinthes. You can expect to pay $75 a liter on average.

As you can see there are two kinds of Absinthe: Verte (green) and La Blanche (white). Both are traditional. Basically the distilled Absinthes are La Blanche, and when additive herbs are steeped into it it gains flavor and a green color, producing a Verte.

If you have not a clue which to select my personal choice for the beginner would be to buy a 0.5 liter bottle of Duplais Balance (costs about $35, 15-25 glasses) which is a rather good Verte absinthe, and to buy an absinthe spoon with it.

You can use a white wine glass to serve Absinthe:

Make sure the glass can comfortably hold 130ml (30+100) or 90ml (20+60) which your Absinthe requires, and that it is fairly wide so it can fit an absinthe spoon. If you want to improvise entirely, a metal tea-strainer can be put on the glass to hold the sugarcube, and a teaspoon can be used to stir the dilute Absinthe afterwards.

An Absinthe preparation that's good for all kinds is to take a wine glass, pour in 30ml (20ml) of Absinthe, then pour 100ml (60ml) icecold water over one sugar cube on an Absinthe spoon, then stirring until all sugar is dissolved in the dilute Absinthe. Upon diluting, most good absinthe turns cloudy (the "louche") or even becomes so cloudy as to become non-transparent. This is usually a good sign, whereas absence of a louche usually is a bad sign.

You drink Absinthe by taking a sip, and spreading it through your mouth for some time before swallowing. Let the aftertaste linger before you sip some more. It is all about the taste, and a good Absinthe has a lot of taste to it. You should relax and take your time for enjoying Absinthe - if a glass lasts you at least twenty minutes before its empty, you are on the right track. Absinthe is not for chugging, and isn't about getting hammered either.

I cannot stress enough that Absinthe should always be diluted with water, 2-5 parts of water to one part of Absinthe. Drinking it neat is like drinking lemonade syrup neat: you can't expect it to taste good that way. Adding one cube of sugar is most common, some add two and others none. Sugar helps to bring out the flavor.

It's important to realize that Absinthe, real Absinthe, is a drink with often a strong anise flavor to it. If you don't like anise, chances are you won't like Absinthe.

Absinthe is best reserved for before or after dinner, or at the close of day, alone or discussing with friends. I recommend against drinking more than three glasses on a given day: if alcohol becomes a factor it is best to switch to a less refined drink better suited for stiff drinking. Absinthe is too expensive to get drunk on, it has too much flavor for continued drinking, and may give rise to a fiendish hangover if drank in excess. For the frequent drinker, one glass of absinthe a day is the most you should drink of it, and preferably more days without absinthe than with to keep it special.

========================================================

I'm going to give you one suggestion almost guaranteed to please you if you like Absinthe:

DUPLAIS BALANCE

Its one of the worlds finest Absinthes, and for its quality (a five star authentic absinthe) it is the cheapest.

It is psychoactive in the way Absinthes are psychoactive. I find it gives you drunkennness with clarity and a tendency to contemplation. It is subtle, drink it as the first drug of the day, when you are fully sober. If you smoke pot the subtleties of Absinthe are lost, so save the joint for after you enjoyed it enough.

You drink Absinthe, in descending order of importance:

1..for the flavor
2..for the ritual
3..for the psychoactivity

'king of spirits' is actively hyped by the manufacturer on the Internet. Must connaisseurs want nothing of it. Trust me on this one, you may find yourself paying twice the price your should pay, and its swill.

Some of the good companies will carry Duplais Balance. I tried several Absinthes and DB I like most. It only has one downside - I rather saw a more traditional label. But the contents of the bottle.. no complaints!

Compare where you can get the best deal though. With this company you almost cannot go wrong. They simply don't carry swill.

Absinthe from Checkeslovicia.

As a rule of thumb - nothing Czech is good and most of it doesnt even bear resemblance to Absinthe.
Czech brands? Avoid.

Quote:

put a splash of absinthe over  spoonful of sugar, then lit it on fire to melt the sugar and mix with ice water which would be poured into a glass containing the melted sugar and a shot of absinthe

This is what is called the Czech/Bohemian ritual. And guess what, there wasnt ANY Czech/Bohemian absinthe tradition there up until the 80s or 90s, 100 years after the genuine Absinthe period.

Most of the stuff are fantasy creations of distilleries with no Absinthe knowledge, just with $$$ in mind.

That "ritual" was invented for a movie. Theres nothing historic about it. It will render swill more interesting but will absolutely RUIN a good Absinthe.

Quote:

good stuff well worth the $70

For $70 a liter bottle of Duplais Balance can be had. If you prepare that properly (dilute with water and a lump of sugar, no fire or aspirins tossed in) you won't BELIEVE what hits your tastebuds. Sooo delicious, and active.

Really Roby, buy any of the brands I listed a few posts up, prepare it properly and you will never buy anything Czech again, promise.

Any Duplais, or a Verte De Fougerolles, or even a Mansinthe (Marlyn Manson's brand, which is actually quality stuff), its just lightyears ahead of most of that Czech mouthwash.

For anyone who wants to try the stuff without risking buying an expensive bottle, I suggest you try making some yourself, its not at all difficult and doesn't cost much.
Of course, it won't be as high quality some of the real stuff, but it will give you a taste of the psycho-activity and flavor.
It mainly consists of simply filling a tea-bag or similar filter with the required herbs and steeping it in hot vodka. Herbs are easy to obtain and you can control the amount of wormwood.

No!  That has nothing to do with Absinthe at all!

The name Absinthe comes from the Wormwood, which is "Absinthe" wormwood in French. Absinthe stems from the greek word Apsinthion, that means "undrinkable".

What you propose will absolutely be just that, undrinkable.

If you steep the herbs in vodka and then distill it, only then will you have an absinthe. And its easy to distill in your kitchen using pots and pans, like so:

Start with 3 liters of cheap but good tasting flavorless vodka, toss in 100gr aniseed, 100gr fennel and 75gr wormwood (you can buy this at herb shops for cheap), in a gallon jug. Then let this sit in a dark closet for 2 days. After that, toss it herbs and all into a Wok Still. Changing the water every 15 minutes or so, distill of those 3 liters, two liters and leave the last liter and the herbs behind.

Those 2 liters you distilled, put in the clean gallon jug and shake vigorously when cold to aerate it, then put it in glass bottles.

Optionally, if you have it and wish it, you can add 5ml foodgrade glycerin (2 teaspoons) per liter.

Presto, you now have 2 liters of a traditional-style "holy trinity" Absinthe that is way ahead of all that Czech crap, for cheap. I recommend to let it sit in the bottles, in the dark, for at least 3 months before drinking. If you keep it well stoppered in the dark, the taste will only refine as it ages.

I myself have taken it one step further and can produce a liter of quality homemade Absinthe (about 55-75% ABV = 110-150 proof) for about $5 using the finest herbs.

i agree that the czech stuff sucks and that nonsense about lighting it on fire is rediculous.

im probably going to have to pick up a bottle of Duplais Balance or Verte De Fougerolles. never tried those before.

Wickan_Seeker, see if you can grab a bottle of Kubler or Jade Verte Suisse. youd probably like them.

Oh hell yea :P
A friend offered me a glass of Jade Edouard once. Jade is teh yummeh, but unfortunately ragingly expensive. If you can spare the money, Jade is top notch I agree, based on my experience with the Edouard and the raving reviews its been getting. Plus, gorgeous labels on the bottles, the modern creepy art labels are the only downside of Duplais. Makes dinner guests think you're serving a gimmick drink. One sip and they're sold though

As i recall there is (or was) an "american" version of Kubler without the wormwood. That of course will not do, not because of "psychoactive effect" but because wormwood is such an important flavor component of Absinthe.

the Jade Verte Suisse is about $100. the Kubler is only $65 or so. both are pretty solid.

For the price of a 0.5 liter Jade bottle I can get a 1.0 liter Duplais Balance bottle and even buy a high end absinthe glass or spoon along with it.

The Kübler.. ya its pretty likely a bottle will come my way sometime soon

Try that Duplais Balance, seriously

Which Pernod do you have?

this one? (Pernod Pastis)

or this one? (Pernod Absinthe)

Note the square "68" tag on the Absinthe.

Pernod Pastis is a nice aperitiv, I especially like it on hot days, one glass will cool you down considerably.

The thing with Pernod Absinthe.. Things like Jade, Duplais and indeed Kubler are made by steeping herbs in alcohol, then distilling the mix with the herbs still in the kettle.

Not so with Pernod Absinthe. Pernod Absinthe is made by taking 65% alcohol, adding essential oils, colorants and additives to it and then filling bottles with it.

This unfortunately is how most cheap liquors are made nowadays but... Pernod Absinthe aint cheap. You pay as much as for a good Absinthe distilled with herbs.

From what I heard, Pernod Absinthe is "nice but not great". I'll gladly sample a glass but I won't shell out bucks for a bottle, not because I know how its made (nontraditional food industry process) and not because I read too many disappointed reviews.

Pernod Fils absinthe from around 1900 was THE Absinthe. Pernod-Ricard of course kept the recipe, the still plans (distillation apparatus shape and materials make or break the flavor of a recipe), the procedure.. But instead of resurrecting the benchmark of quality that their great grandfathers made, they chose to mass produce an oil mix liquor thats cheaper to produce yet priced at least $15 per bottle too high compared with similar liquors.

Pernod Fils absinthe was about quality, the contemporary Pernod Absinthe is about profit.

For $15 cheaper per bottle I'd buy it and it probably will be OK, but given its the same price I much rather spend that money on a traditional Absinthe and be rewarded by a green goddess thats great.

Its not snobbery, they just got greedy and put a big price on a small bottle.

Two of my favorites are Absinthe Suisse La Bleue Clandestine and Abisinthe Amer. You can't go wrong with either of those.

La Bleue Clandestine is really good. I usually have a bottle of Kubler on hand, I tend to like swiss absinthes.
Wiccan Seeker gave a lot of spot on info here, I'll add another "avoid Czech absinthes" here- they are just wormwood bitters, as they typically don't contain the anise.
If you like anise, you'll like absinthe. Let us know what you get and what you like!

OK a reply to an old post - but that is why old posts are still kept and not ditched.

Absinthe has never been illegal in Spain - unlike other European countries, and has been continually made here since the 1850s.  I can buy a bottle of Marie Mayans 80% for about €14.  But Mrs Fly hates me drinking the stuff.
