has anyone tried canning casing material?
    #11405334 - 11/07/09 04:30 PM (8 years, 13 days ago)

i've been thinking about this for a while. i'm always pressed for time and when i spawn to bulk i usually have some leftovers. i want to mix the leftover with verm, get it to field capacity, jar it, PC it and keep it on a shelf so when i need it, it's there ready to go.

i'm gonna run the PC later for 1 jar of agar. i figured now would be a good time to try it.

what do you all think?

:goodmorning:

if u dont get every thing killed or what not the time it sits on the shelf will give the contams. a chance to get a foot hold VS. getting rid of the majority of them and as soon as it cools innoc. therefore giving it competition and a less chance contams will gain control

how long do you think i should run it for? i usually do agar for 30 min. and WBS for 60 min. the casing material will be mostly verm so since it's not as dense as WBS i was thinking like 45min. so i can pour my agar sooner.

also, do you think i should use solid lids to seal it or go ahead with the tyvek lids i use for everything else?

You want a vacuum seal if you are canning. I can coffee grounds for bulk sub, works great.

:super:

i just bag it in ziplocks and freeze it, but sometimes my freezer get a bit too full. i just send wifey to starbuck's anyway. actually she even pasturizes the sub material for me so it's cooled off when i get home from work. :pimp3: i guess i got it pretty good.

i have and do often can my casing material. I usually make a bunch before i use it. In the last 45 min of pasteurizing i slap on a canning lid rubber down and then let them cool off in the pot. The lids seal shut. I have had casing sit for 2 weeks in jars and used them fine it actually gives the Oyster shell flour more time to do its thing

Nope I pasteurize my casing. Alittle under half way through the pasteurizing I seal them rubber side down with there lids

i'm thinking if i PC it it'll have a longer shelf life and i'll get less colonizing of the casing layer.

You could sterilize it. Im a fan of not thoe. I like to pasteurize. Especially when doing Pan Cyans you should def not sterilize .

Dry it out, or are you trying to skip re-pasteurizing?
