When music meets plants
    #11405248 - 11/07/09 04:14 PM (8 years, 18 days ago)

What do you think about music being benificial to plant growth?
From what I read palnts grow better under the influence of music. Mythbusters did an experiment on this. It turns out the best growth and yield was from the plants wich had any kind of sound interacting with them. They found out that the meaning of words didn't affect the result, for example Vivaldi's classical music didn't turn out better results than death metal. But this doesn't match with Dr. Masaru Emoto's water crystals experiment. So I'd go with positive music.
Now I'm leting my Bridgesii listen to this:

I just dont buy into it.

Not sure why, Just cant see any real sense of benefit of having a radio or whatever on playing to my plants while I'm not there.

Yes, it has tremendous effect, for pretty much the same reasons as shown in Dr. Emotos research.
Not only music, but talking, singing, joking and just admiring plants as shown to vastly improve the health and increase the vigor of plants.
You know those "good vibes" all the hippies and new agers are always talking about? It lamen terms, its pretty much the same thing, so keep throwing them at your plants, they will reward you with better growth; I've been doing it for 20+ years.

If you are interested in how music affects plants, I would suggest giving the book The Secret Life Of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird a read. It is the book that started that theory.

I've never been able to tell - all of my indoor plants get a lot of laughter/music/sounds every day   The outdoor plants get the birds, wind, rain, street noise, and yelling neighbor noises too lol.

Until the 20th century, reality was everything humans could touch, smell, see,
and hear.
Since the initial publication of the charged electromagnetic spectrum, humans
learned that what they can touch, smell, see, and hear... is less than one
millionth of reality.

The Secret Life of Plants that you are referring to is not to my knowledge linked in any way to the book mentioned.  I LOVE David Attenborough videos, though, and have definitely seen that series.  Another good series of his is "The Living Planet" which is 12, ~50 minute episodes.  If you're into nature documentaries and wild plant harvesting/bushcrafting/outdoors stuff, Ray Mears has a bunch of great documentaries, too.

I believe music, noise and any general interaction with plants is beneficial to their growth - i am unsure of the exact mechanism though. I suspect it may stimulate growth by exciting cells, similar in action to wind - i could be completely wrong though.

If my plants listen to anything, its Ravi Shankar :vaped:

plants generally rely on other organisms to reproduce.
Why grow if you're not going to reproduce? and if you do grow, you're going to be pretty unhappy, knowing you're not gonna get any.
The way i rationalize it, letting them know that something's there gives them hope that one day, they'll flower and i'll come rolling around in their fun bits and spread the pollen elsewhere.

Maybe i'm too imaginative

Many, many people have claimed that magnets improve plant growth. Speakers are magnet-driven.

Also, it was found that classical music contains frequencies emitted by chirping birds and crickets. Plants were said to take up more CO2 when exposed to the frequencies. In one case, cornstalks grew to twice their normal height.
