reason i ask is because i don't want to mix a really good substrate

can you elaborate on this? mixing a really good substrate sounds optimal.

or do you mean you dont want to mix a good substrate w/ an inferior one?

i mean i dont want to waste what would be perfect for cubes, and use it on pans having it not work

the coir and coffee will be fine ... you want some kind of fluffy material in there like the coir or some verm ... if the hpoo is powdered its likely to be muddy ... coir will help ... also if you re doing pans keep depth to 3 inches or less

they have pretty much identical likings for substrates with an affinity for poo bases... ive plucked them growing together out of the same patties outside ... pans just dont like brf and cased grains ...

yeh it ended up getting muddy so i add plenty of verm too loosen it up
and actually you're supposed to go no deeper than 2 inches with pans
