    #1140486 - 12/14/02 09:52 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. After reading this book 3 times I consider it one of my best read's. Swami this would be a good book for you, though im sure you have read it. So SP&S what are your thoughts on this book?

It's a very beautiful book... I've read it more than a half on my trip to Peru... but in the second part I think it's a little hard to follow... maybe I should try again, my problem is that I can't complete a book because I always start reading another one! Now I'm reading more or less 5 books in the same time...
Mind confusing? NAAAAAAA

Also try "The zen and the art of archery" it's wonderful, I think I should read it again!

I liked it. I'll like it again sometime.

Nietzsche's still better.

I did read it and enjoy it, but as it has been probably 25 years, would need a refresher to comment in detail on it. (Am also a motorcyclist

A most excellent book, as was the sequel (Lila? Layla? Something like that).

It's been a long time since I read it, but I would read it again in a flash.

If you liked this book, you should without a doubt read The Dancing Wu Li Masters by Gary Zukav.

Lila. And yes, Pirsig's book changed the way many people thought. A great book by a great man. We'll leave this thread here for a while and then pop it over to the Literary forum for those people to add their comments as well.

At some point we should do a reading of this book as well in the Literary forum.

Pirsig was insane and his ideas still have the insanity in them that he once had. His philosophical obfuscation took me years to unravel but I thank him for starting me on the road to clearer thinking.

What obfuscation?
I thought it was all pretty clear-cut in that book (but then again... it was right up my alley).

It was a good book. I say it's slightly better than The Book by Alan Watts.
Again... Nietzsche's zen is a finer vintage.

*remembers that he offered to do a read-along on Nietzsche... then realizes how difficult that will be (many reasons)... figures he'll get around to it when he cleans the shit off the fan*

The obfuscation I am referring to was the problem that he had with the department of philosophy at the University of Chicago and the Great Books Program. Pirsig is certainly no realist. He thinks things are the way the are because of his consciousness. Nothing could be further from the truth. (Deliberate pun) Dr. Hutchins and the department were done a great diservice by Bob and I am quite sure he doesn't understand their thought to this day. His off-handed dismissal of Aristotle rates him a first rate second rate philosopher. Evidently he couldn't understand the premises well enough to formulate an intelligent rebuttal. I could go on but I think you see my point. Bob Pirsig is nuts, a brilliant nut.

Yes, I have not forgotten your promise to do a reading but I wonder if the road blocks you threw up will enable us to have it. I doubt very much if very many of us have the same version of any particular book of Nietzsche.

Oh... THAT obfuscation... Yeah, I call that EGO.
I actually thought his super-support for rhetoric and the corresponding super-dismissal of dialectic is retarded... both are needed. Fuck sophistry.
He's a fighter... fighters need fights, even if they have to start them.

As for the Nietzsche... I've thought about posting an excerpt or essay online (on my site). Then everyone can print out a copy and read along. Hopefully I won't have to type one out. *looks for his 'round to-it'*

Yes, THAT obfuscation.  I think Bob had a few personal problems he tried to fob off onto the department, Aristotle, and realists.  Still I am eternally indebted to him for lighting a fire under me that cannot be extinguished.  My love of truth and clear thinking via philosophy.

Hopefully you won't have to type it out.  What I cannot understand is why the stress on a particular version.  It sounds like those maniac fundamentalists that cling to the King James version of the Bible.

At any event I will be here when you find your *round to it*.  That is if the dam don't break and God is willing.

Cheers,
