Perlite Quesetions

Got a couple of perlite questions.
1. I bought an 8qt bag of perlite at a local hydro shop for $5. Upon inspecting my 66qt sterilite shotgun terrarium I don't think this is going to be enough. The one 8qt bag will only fill it to about 1 - 1/2 in. Will one more bag suffice? Or would I be better off with just buying a smaller sized plastic tub? I'm starting off with 2 cakes.. eventually 4 more slower growers will join in this batch.
2. How long will the perlite last me in there? Can I birth some to full harvest and then put new cakes in there or will I have to change it up?

1)You could do either, but I think it would be easier to just get a smaller fruiting chamber since you only have 2 cakes.
The first time I tried it, I used some chinese food containers that a quart of soup came in. Or a cottage cheese container with appropriate holes. Mushrooms seem to like being close together when in a larger tank.
2) You can reuse the perlite multiple times. If you stick a finger in it and it's too dry, just remove the cake for a minute and rehydrate your perlite. Regular misting also helps keep the perlite damp. Mine has lasted through.....5 grows now. You'll be fine.

Yeah.. plastic containers are just about as much as the perlite, so I might do that. Save the 66qt for when I have 10 or so cakes. It'll be 2 now.. and then I'll add the other 4 in about a week or two, so a total of 6 will fit in there. So what? maybe like a 24qt or 32qt or something..

I use a cheap plastic tub from walmart, I think a 32 or 48 quart. Usually there's between 12 and 15 cakes in it. This has proven to be quite easy to keep up and clean, too. The bins are about $5-6 each. Just your regular opaque storage bins.
If you wanna save the 66qt, you could do a few strains in there at once. Maybe 2 batches of 10 or 12? Just keep each kind to its own side and then you have it all in one place.

Yea, this one looks good: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10401050 Should be a good house for 6 cakes. 27qt. That way I wouldn't have to buy another bag of perlite. Hopefully my local wal-mart has them

That's about the same size i have, though mine looks more like this http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?povid=cat90828-env203989-module232191-rLink1&product_id=8282894
However, the ones I get are always either on an endcap or in the middle of the store for $5-6 and the opaque is always good for the darkness the shrooms need. That is, unless you're storing them somewhere dark already.

I thought you wanted something transparent so that light CAN reach them? I was gonna put em by a 26w 5600k bulb for 12/12. What do you do?

ambient sunlight and room lighting.
2-4 inches of perlite. many holes on all sides of a transparent bin.
mushrooms dont really need darkness. they need food and water. and light. after birthing.

It won't or shouldn't drip much. You want it elevated so that air can come up through the bottom. Let it drip in the bathtub until it is done dripping. What keeps the perlite in? I dunno, it's magic.
