The Role of DMT in the Human Brain\Psilocin?
    #1140297 - 12/14/02 08:17 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I am very intrigued by the fact that such a potent entheogen as DMT occurs naturally in the human brain. What role does it play in neurochemistry and in consiousness? Why does it also occur in various plants? Any ideas? I think it's also very interesting that psilocin (what psilocybin gets turned into once ingested) is so very similar to DMT.
DMT Compared to Psilocin
What role do psilocybin and psilocin have in the physiology of mushrooms? Why does a neurotransmitter of the human brain occur in certain plants and fungi? Any theories about any of this?

Read DMT:The Spirit Molecule by Rick Strassman if you haven't already done so. I don't think anyone has any definite answers to your questions though.

There are no commonly accepted answers to your questions.  There are many theories!

For instance this one:  theory on psychedelics

I haven't decided on any of the other questions, but for this one:

Why does a neurotransmitter of the human brain occur in certain plants and fungi?

I think that neurotransmitters in plants is simply a demonstration of the interconnectedness of life. poisons and digestible foods are just as mysterious, I say. there are tons of different trees producing all kinds of yummy yummy fruit.. conspiracy, perhaps?

Well put!  This puts into the question the isolation of our minds from nature.  Are our minds really separate from reality?  I don't buy it.  All forms of life on Earth exist in symbiotic relationships.

In reply to:

DMT is produced by the pineal gland as part of the regulation of the dream state. At night, darkness stops the inhibition of melatonin production in the pineal. This makes you feel sleepy. After enough melatonin has accumulated it starts being converted to pinoline (that's a contraction of the worlds pineal harmaline), a hallucinogenic (and sometimes psychedelic) beta-carboline. With enough b-carbolines in the brain MAO is inhibited enough to allow increased DMT production which, along with pinoline and other b-carbolines, results in the profoundly strange experience of dream sleep.

Strassman and others, such as Callaway, Naranjo, and Mavromatis, also believe that DMT inhances our connection and/or awareness of alternative states of being such as near death, out of body, or alien abduction experiences.
