a learning experience
    #1140273 - 12/14/02 07:58 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

i spent 5 hours yesterday mixing substarate and steaming jars. this morning i woke up and began preparing to innoculate my sterile jars.............after peeling off the tin-foil, the jars appeared as if they had already been contaminated, which is impossible.............................it turns out, the rag wich i used as heat barrier at the bottom of the pot while steaming released shitload of blue dye which completely ruined my fuckn jars. needless to say, im extremely fuckn pissed off and thought id post the message to prevent other peops from making the same idiotic mistake-- make SURE the rag u use has been washed a few times before using it as a heat barrier.

also, i have a question: has anyone noticed that the water content of jars increases alot during steaming? all my jars have far more (blue) water in them than they did prior to steaming. ive decided to use far less water in my substrate to compensate for this.

Shitty dude, sorry to hear that. I gues practice will make perfect though. An idea...what i do is roll tinfoil into finger sized rolls about 12" long, bend them into a V, and put 3 or 4 of those in the bottom of my pressure cooker to stop heat transfer. Works great.

Hi, well it seems like you are not covering your jars adequately when you're boiling them!  You shouldn't be getting water, blue or not , into your jars.  I don't use lids either as I use glasses instead of jars, but when I have my foil on top of the jar with holes pierced in it, I then cover that with another layer of double-wrapped foil and scrunch the ends up into a lid to keep the water out when boiling the jars.  I used a brand new blue towel when boiling jars, but it didn't matter as I had the water on a low boil, and the jars wee securely covered with foil.

Don't mess up your water content after carefully measuring it out

Ditto what cook said... were the lids on your jars tight? were the innoc. holes covered with tape? I do both this and put foil on the tops. Good luck.

btw, nskiller said hopefully blue wont hurt the sub. but I hope you know of course that the formula for your jars have now been completely thrown off. Dont use 'em.

actually i covered the jars with tin foil well which makes me think that the steam carried the blue die inside of the jars-- all the innoc. holes were securely covered. the sides of the pot, which never came in contact with the condensed water, were also stained blue. i think i had too much water in the pot with too much heat.

the steaming pot i use can hold 4 half-pint jars on the bottom. the first 4 jars that i steamed had alot more blue water in the in them than did the following 2 batches (evidently, the dye burnt off after each batch). as a result, i was able to salvage 6 of the total 12 jars, which showed no sign of the blue dye.
