Moist bottom casing lair?
    #1140252 - 12/14/02 07:40 AM (15 years, 2 days ago)

I dunked my cakes last night and have just made a verm casing following the Easy Casing Method (http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=39)  Nowhere in this tech did it mention to use a moist bottom layer only a moist top layer but on reading the Shroomery FAQ about casing it says to use a moist bottom layer of verm (http://shroomery.org/faq/faq.php?display=faq&nr=55&catnr=4&prog=1&lang=en)

What gives? Why the conflicting advice?

Do I use a dry bottom layer or a damp one?

damp. but apparently the jury's still out on whether it's a good idea or not. Make yours damp by drooling water down the side of the tray, and tilting the tray.

I use about a 1/2 inch damp verm bottom layer ..... helps keep the moisture content of a casing or cake up longer. Hence larger fruits and more of them. Bottom damp layer is a good thing. Once you have success at verm casings I`d move on to some better top layers... say 50% peat moss/50% verm...... or coco-coir retains moisture even longer

I've already made the casing following the Easy Casing Method with a DRY bottom layer. Could I just water the top layer abit so it permeates through to the bottom layer?

Damn, this is my first casing and I wish I hadn't followed that shitty Easy Casing Method! I hope this works out cos this is a huge 2 pint casing!
