What kind of Mushrooms are these I think they're Batwings
    #11401925 - 11/07/09 02:17 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

These are some mushrooms that my brother found growing on a rock in a state park not far from his house in Sandstone MN. They look a little like Batwings, a psychedelic mushroom I've been finding on the streets here in Duluth MN (not growing but sold on the streets) and I was wondering what kind of mushroom they actually are and if they are safe to eat and if they are actually psychedelic?

The black part is the gills, the off-white is the top of the cap. They had a tiny almost non-existent stem.

My brother took these pictures with the PSEye on his PS3 and emailed them to me, sorry about the quality.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

I know, I've never been able to find them on the internet all I know about them is their street name is batwings and it takes about an 8th to a quarter for a good trip. They taste not that bad, kinda like pistachios. With a little salt they'd taste good, but I'm not sure if that's what these are, that's why I want to know if they're edible

These look like Lichens.  They are not psychoactive.  You should not eat them.

I have never heard of anything like that ever before.

I have no idea what you have there in your pics, do not eat them.

Looks like something called Rock Tripe.

They are edible as a last resort, but don't seem to be something you'd choose to eat.

yep, yours is Rock Tripe, Umbilicaria mammulata; the mushroom sometimes called Batwings is Auricularia polytricha

Thanks for clearing up what those were, but I'm still confused as to what Batwings are. They're not auricularia polytricha, because those are Wood Ears, which are sold in grocery stores. Batwings are psychedelic, so what kind of mushroom looks a lot like Wood Ears, except it is psychoactive?

You're right Twistedsage those are batwings. Now if I only knew what the hell they actually are! I've taken them many times, theyre surprisingly easy to get around here, considering nobody else in the world knows what they are. I just wish I knew more about them, it's been mystery to me for over a year now

Well I poked around for a minute and found this, but it's not about a mushroom:

Recently, I had the pleasure of stomping around in the homeland of our very own Ian "Bring the Pain" King. In my travels, I found a plant in the Coral Tree family. The species of Erythrina with the popular name of Bat’s Wing is used as a sedative, a sleep aid if you will.

The Erythrina (E. vespertilio specifically) contains alkaloids (erythrane, erythroidine, coralline and others) which cause sedating and relaxation effects when given in small doses. However, in large doses, it can cause unpredictable behavior like erratic laughing spells, mania, wild sexual urges, and even deep depression.

So you're saying Batwings are actually bark ftom a corel tree? Maybe, but it doesn't explain why they're sold as shrooms. I'm even more confused now... thanks for the effort though, good detective work
