what's the rule of thumb here? is it once you see the top fully colonized, wait an additional week? what if there is knotting up top?:mushroom2:

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

I have had several monos that were just finishing colonizing and started knotting.  As soon as i see knots i introduce fruiting conditions even if colonization is not 100%.  I have had good luck with this so far.  The tub that did it the earliest was a solid producer with a first flush of just under 4 oz. dry.  I think the trick is once it knots get it to fruit so it will make more knots and mature the existing knots properly.

if the top is fully colinised you can usually assume that the rest of the substrate has colinised, and if you have prepared your bulk and spawn well it should be fine.

After colinisation its usually a good idea to allow 1 week for the mycelium to digest the food it has just colinised, though sometimes pinning just happens quickly and i think then you can just throw into fruiting.

Not everyone gives the 1 week wait, some put into fruiting once its done colinising.

I wait for the first signs of hyphal knots then hit it with FAE and put it in fruiting conditions.
