The Wheel

The truth about our society is in these words:
The Wheel
The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.
Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more? Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more?
Round, round robin run round, got to get back to where you belong, Little bit harder, just a little bit more, A little bit further than you gone before.
The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.
Small wheel turn by the fire and rod, Big wheel turn by the grace of God, Every time that wheel turn 'round, Bound to cover just a little more ground.
The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.

Great song. It's by the Grateful Dead. I love it when they played this song after 20 or so minutes of drums and space. Out of this vacuum of eary, ambient sounds comes the first few notes of melodic bliss that is The Wheel. It never fails to give me goose bumps.

Thanks guys! I was never too much into the dead. I had a total of one album of theirs which had roses on it. I didn't like it then I don't care for their music now. I got a chance to see them before Jerry died and I am grateful myself for that. It was a real cultural phenomenon.

The Words are from Robert Hunter who was the lyricist for the Band since its inception. More of a Poet to me! Glad you liked them Plato!

no, no, no... not "the band" (robertson, danko, et al...)(toured with dylan when he went electric, worked on the "blonde on blonde" album, did their own "music from big pink" right on through to "the last waltz" hey, ripple meant by the band, the good old dead... gracia & hunter worked together on dozens of songs... (robert hunter also did some solo work, and has written stuff for jefferson airplane, quicksilver, and quite a few other folks; he has also translated some poetry by rainer maria rilke into english, and has done a few books of his own poetry... the song "box of rain" was written for & with phil lesh (for phil lesh's dad) and is the title for hunter's collected lyrics... ~ ~

Thanks for clearing that up gnrm, I also loved "The Band" but as gnrm said i was just using the familiar term that Deadheads use when talking about the Greatful Dead! Hunters words really move me though and Box of Rain is another fine example of his talent.
Box of Rain
Look out of any window, any morning, any evening, any day. Maybe the sun is shining, birds are singing, No rain is falling from a heavy sky. What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago.
Walk out of any doorway, feel your way, feel your way like the day before. Maybe you'll find direction, Around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you. What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you are sleeping? The please don't be surprised when you find me dreaming too.
Look into any eyes you find by you, you can see clear to another day, Maybe been seen before, through other eyes on other days while going home. What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago.
Walk into splintered sunlight, Inch your way through dead dreams to another land. Maybe you're tired and broken, Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? A box of rain will ease the pain, and love will see you through.
Just a box of rain, wind and water, Sun and shower, wind and rain, In and out the window like a moth before a flame.
And it's just a box of rain, I don't know who put it there, Believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare.
And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair; Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.
